When we started the venue hunt we had assumed that our deposit would be in the $250-$500 range. This figure was based on pretty much EVERYONE that we know who has gotten married in the past few years. The highest deposit that I had even heard of was $1000 and what was for one of the most expensive venues in our area.
We were fortunate enough to book my DREAM venue but that came with a serious catch. The deposit ended up being 1/3 the total amount due. This is roughly $1750. That was a serious shocker. We obviously weren’t expecting to have to pay this much so that was pretty rough (we ate eggs for dinner for like a week!).
How much of a deposit was required for your venue?

Our deposit was about 1/3 of the venue cost as well.

We paid $500… which seemed typical at all the places we looked…

Ours was 1/2 the total amount, which amounted to $700.
EDIT: After reading some of the other posts, I think I should mention that this was just the location and chairs & tables. Catering and linens were a differet company with a different deposit.

We didn’t need to put down a deposit, all we had to do was sign a contract. If we cancelled with them, there would be a $500 charge, however.

I forget our deposit, but our total is $2000. But it doesnt provide catering. Only tables and a full day rental. Depends what your venue provides may change what it charges and therefore the deposit

I paid $5,000. I think it depends where you live and on the venue.

I should probably mention that our venue includes all catering (3 course sit down dinner for 80), open bar, linens, tables, chairs, bridal suite for the wedding night and the ceremony. Our wedding is in Upstate, NY.

Ours was about 40% of the total, definitely a significant sum.

Our deposit was $2500, which was 50% of the venue cost.

My deposit was $500. I think it varies from place to place- some of the places we were looking at asked for a percentage, which would have definitely made it higher.
