I am so very excited about this! It has been an issue I have brought up to people and found that people didn’t even know that genes could be patented! Very thrilled that there was a step taken in the correct direction here.
Just wanted to share My excitement!

This is great news indeed! I’ve also been surprised by how few people have even been aware of gene patenting. But what do you mean when you say “people didn’t even know that genes should be patented“? The point of the article is that they cannot be anymore…

@Baimee: gotcha.
When I was a teaching assistant for a college course where we taught human biology and ethics, we actually had a formal debate on gene patenting. The students had to do their own research and everything. Very few people knew about it ahead of time, but it seemed like almost everyone concluded that it sounds like a bad idea.

@Taeyers: That sounds like a fun class. The idea of patenting something that occurs naturally, and in our own bodies has always been ridiculous to me! Not to mention I take huge ethical issue with monopolizing research on some of these things. It’s revolting and disgraceful to the scientific process and the spirit of advancing in the field. It was blocking progress to help people, for goodness sake!
