Sounds like a fun honeymoon– Kauai is our favorite island!  For beginning surfers, the best place is Hanalei Bay, hands down.  It’s on the north shore but is super calm in the summer.  The bay is absolutely gorgeous, and it’s very shallow a LONG way out so that you can walk your board out to where the waves are breaking if you need to.  Also, the bottom is sandy so it’s not nearly as painful to fall off or stand up.

For rentals, there’s a little shack next to the taco stand…  the name escapes me right now.  But in any case, you pay for rentals, get a rash guard, and sign up for lessons at the shack, then head down to the beach to collect your surfboard.  It’s very convenient.

As a bonus, a lot of celebs have houses on the north shore… last time we were out in Hanalei, Pierce Brosnan and his kids were surfing right next to us!

hope this helps and enjoy planning!

I second Hanalei for surfing. You only have to be waist-deep in water to catch a wave; it’s one of the safest (and most beautiful) beaches to learn!

We took our first ever surfing lesson at Hanalei also, it was great!  easy rolling waves and a nice sandy bottom
