(1) Do not talk about how you want to get into the profession to “help people”. Too many people say this and it doesn’t help differentiate you from other candidates.

(2) What makes you different from most candidates? Why would the profession benefit from having you in its ranks? When I applied to veterinary school, I emphasized that my undergraduate degree was in Chemical Engineering. Some may have considered that a disadvantage, but I spun it as, “I have a scientific background that differs from a lot of veterinary school applicants, who are often biology majors. I’m fantastic at science and math; and I’m good at taking fairly complex concepts and utilizing them, vs just rote memorization.”

(3) Genuinely evaluate WHY you want to do this. Do you find medical stuff fascinating? Awesome – tell them that. Are you gung-ho motivated to pursue further training to become a surgical assistant? By God, emphasize that. Was a friend/family member a surg tech who inspired you to become one? Mention that, too.

(4) I’m assuming you know this, but please don’t have any typos.

If you want, I’d be willing to read over your application. I used to be a copy editor and I’m in a medical field. Just PM me with either your application or your email address. Good luck!
