Opening this discussion back up! I am so excited because an amazing band is giving us a great deal when we were planning on hiring a DJ for budget reasons. One of the greatest things we bond over is live music and he wanted to hire this particular band so badly because they play in all our favorite spots in our hometown. I am planning to go make him think we are going with our “DJ plan” but surprise him at the first dance with this amazing band instead. I just hope I can pull off the surprise up until that late the day of the wedding without him noticing equipment or anyone slipping up! I was also planning on getting him a cute but cheap grooms cake.

I need an idea too! Ice sculpture but that seems so dated…..monogram on the dance floor? Hes a flashy guy not sure how to wow him. I just feel like I have picked everything and dismissed his ideas. I want there to be SOMETHING thats him.

I agree with the groom’s cake idea…most guys don;t even know that it’s a tradition so he’ll be surprised when he see it. Pick something that means something to him. My Fiance has had this little toy monkey since he was kid…i think the toy’s actual name is a “Gonga Gorrilla” it’s a small toy from the 80’s but anyways he still keeps it in his nightstand next to the bed, doesn’t know that i know it’s there…I know that might sound weird but I think it’s adorable, especially since he’s kinda a tough guy. The toy is no bigger than the palm of your hand so obvs i’ll ask them to make it bigger but I plan on having a Gonga Gorrilla Groom’s cake made for him!

I’m getting us a custom cake topper, of us and our two dogs. He has no idea. 🙂

Also I’m hopefully making a groom’s cake, but we’ll have that at the rehearsal dinner.

I have organised the local theatre singers to do the whole “glee Marry you” performance when I come down the ailse. They will be seated throughout the guests. The flower girl and pageboy will walk down the ailse, then just before the bridesmaids start the song will change into marry you and the performers will jump out!

Hopefully its going to be great

Ps – FH is a HUGE glee fan

I want to have a really cool groom’s cake that is NY Yankees/NY Giants themed but I don’t want any fondant on it because we hate fondant. Hmmm….

So many great ideas here! I have been thinking of what to do to give Mr. Skoochabelle a surprise and I was thinking of doing a groom’s cake of a stack of books (he loves books… as in, we’re gonna need a “library” in our future house!) with some of his fave authors written on the spines. BUT… he doesn’t really like cake.

Other ideas: Get the band to learn a song he won’t be expecting? After the ceremony (en route to the reception), stop at the baseball field where he played Little League and do some fun photos there? (oh! and i can bring a bat, ball, and glove! that would be so cute!) Maybe boudoir photos?? (I think I’d be embarrassed posing though? Or if someone else ever came upon them… like our future kids! or our parents! No joke… I was house-sitting for a coworker once and came across her boudoir photos. My brain can’t un-see what I saw! haha) Really nice bottle of wine is great idea — he loves wine — maybe we can have it on our sweetheart table to drink at the reception. Will coordinate with the bakery that is doing our dessert table and ask them to include his favorite cookies, but he won’t even realize that’s a special thing.

Other ideas??

As a guy, here is what my honest reaction to a groom’s cake would be:

“Wow, that’s pretty neat. Alright, can we eat it now?”

In other words, I just don’t see the point. I wonder if other guys agree with me on this, or whether it’s just me here.

Point being, ladies, you know how there’s stuff that us guys *think* you like but you probably don’t?

I *think* the same might be true of groom’s cakes.

I’m having a special centerpiece made for my Fiance. He is a mechanic so I found a welder/artist and commissioned for him to make “flowers” out of car parts. They turned out great! I’m not thinking Fiance is going to be like “OMG WOW I GOT MY OWN CENTERPIECE WHOOOO!” surprised, but I know he’ll appreciate the fact that I thought of him through this process.

I’m going to surprise mine with a custom made sword, with his clan crest and our animal symbols on it.  Made in Scotland 🙂  Hoping he wears it in the wedding as well 🙂

The groom’s cake sounds like a great – and not over the top – way of surprising him. It will show him how much you care, are thinking of him, etc etc etc!

I’m having his Converse embroidered with our wedding date.  He is super sentimental & will love it.

I’m planning on pre-recording our first dance song and playing it for our first dance, because he always says I have a beautiful voice but I never sing enough.

He’s super healthy, so I’m planning on *hopefully* finding a bakery that can make me a “healthier” version of a cake- with protein, chia seeds, whole grain flour. Lol. Even if it tastes horrible, I think he’ll get a hit out of it. I’d like to roll it in with sparklers on while his favorite video game song plays.

We had a DJ at our reception, but I convinced my brother and some of his friends to learn just 1 song – a really special song to us – and play it during the reception. He was soooo surprised and really loved it. I think something meaningful is important.

I’m doing a groom’s cake and surprise flash mob dance during the reception (as long as my bridesmaids are willing participants) to MJ’s “The Way You Make Me Feel.”  I also got the idea from a DJ (not even the one I booked) to put tickets in your garter belt for his favorite sporting team.
