@lsimpson:  I voted ring shopping together but I have conditions on that.

It seems to me a lot of women feel that they should get to pick whatever they want and that they have the right to pout or be dissapointed if they don’t get their “dream” ring.

I look at am engagement ring as a gift.  My husband took me ring shopping and we both had input on what we liked/didn’t like but HE was totally in charge of what he spent.  While I felt fine saying I liked or didn’t like a particular style and preferred white gold or platinum to yellow gold,  I didn’t feel it was my place to ask for or demand that he spend a certain amount or ask for a certain size stone.

Ultimately, he found a ring he liked and brought me to the store to see it.  I loved it.  It was exactly what we had both been looking for without knowing exactly what we were looking for.  He went back later and bought it and surprised me with a proposal.  I have no idea what my ring cost or what the specs are and I don’t care.

@lsimpson:  We compromised – I choose the band since that is the big dictator in style and then he choose the diamond at his leisure and surprised me when he proposed.  After we went it once and I found my band? He put a deposit on it and then I didn’t hear about it again until he proposed about 6 weeks later.  I was still surprised.  The diamond he picked out was emerald cut and way bigger than I was expecting and his proposal was perfect.  I found it to have the best of both worlds.

I kind of picked mine out… I tried on several and he already knew which one was for me after that… If you pick a couple that you loved then you can have him pick one of those so it’d be a surprise? Wink

There’s this great website called Pinterest… LOL!

My now fiance looked on my wedding board on Pinterest. At the time, I maybe had like 3 rings on there, which, he later explained, it looked at all of them in person and decided something simple would work best for me since I’m a simply girl. I actually wasn’t expecting his proposal so it came as a complete surprised–hence, he didn’t take my shopping for my engagement ring. I actually told him that I didn’t want anything expensive but he had this crazy idea in his head that back in the day, a perspective groom would spent 3 months’ salary on an engagement ring. He did just that and purchased a ring from Tiffany and Co. I pretty much died, lol.

Anyways, I was able to pick my wedding band, and I let him pick his own wedding band (which is quite nerdy, if I do say so myself). Whatever makes him happy, lol.

My future sister-in-law and I are ninjas.

We’re really good friends (I’ve been in my relationship for almost 5 years) and she’s as excited about the idea of us getting married as I am. When my bf started asking me pointed questions about using his mother’s diamond (she passed away) and such, his sister and I got coffee and strategized, haha. We went and looked at rings, got my size, and found an amazing local jeweler. And the next time BF brought up deciding on a setting for the diamond, I just said, “Why don’t you ask *sister’s name* for help choosing one?” It’s well known that we have similar tastes, so he didn’t bat an eyelash……

So it’ll be a “surprise” but secretly I had a pretty good deal of input!!

I choose “other” on the poll because I picked out the ring, but we did not go ring shopping together. I basically found “the one” while browsing online and sent him an email with a link. “Oh you know, IF you decide to propose, I think this ring is pretty cool”.

My guy and I talked about wanting to spend our lives together and planned getting engaged. We went shopping together for the ring. He picked it up (with out me knowing– kind of 😉 ) and proposed. For me, it was the best of both worlds. I got to pick out the ring and get the romantic surprise proposal I always wanted. And he was happy knowing that I got what made me happy and creating the day. 🙂
