mggBoyles:  There are a few other questions to answer first. Are you getting getting donor sperm from the family member? Or are you going to use a 3rd party? There are ways to self inseminate without going the IVF route. IVF can be very expensive. You can always go to a fertility clinic close by and discuss options with them. But first things first, I’d say go to your OB/GYN and get a check up on yourself. You can probably start the discussion there.

Edit to add: you’ll probably need some sort of legal contract in place. Doing something with family without legal protection in place can be risky. Emotions come into play, things happen…

Good luck!

Since she’s getting an egg from the distant family member, they’re going to be doing the bulk of the IVF work. You’ll just be doing the transfer, probably frozen (FET) unless you’re all in the same area and can coordinate at the same clinic. Your doctor will decide whether to do a medicated or nautral FET or if you are doing a fresh transfer, they’ll monitor you and put you on meds to sync you up with the donor of the egg. I’d start with researching clinics first, most work with surrogates all the time and will be able to point you in the right direction. Your friend is very lucky to have you 🙂

Wow that is such a wonderful thing you are doing. It takes a lot for someone to do what you are doing.
