I’ve been reading a few reviews online of Suzhou, the wedding dress town near Shanghai. My thought process goes a bit like this:
– I am working in Malaysia. That’s practically next door, in global terms!
– I can get flights for about 150GBP plus 30GBP for the visa.
– I have some time to kill in September.
– I have never been to China before.
– Dresses there are sooo cheap… an expensive one is about 200GBP.
So… has anyone ever been? What was it like? Any tips? Any good shops? How long do I need to spend there?

Funny you should ask this.
I was thinking of heading over to China to get my dresses custom made too (I live in New Zealand – further than you, but not too far).
I haven’t been, but have looked into replica dresses A LOT so you would probably need to be there for at least a week (if not 2 weeks) depending on how busy the factory you chose was.
With regard to finding a reputable factory to make a dress for you, you would have to have a look at all the replica sites plus check out alibaba.com for wholesalers. If you have the time you could always visit a number of factories, check out their work and go from there.
I know there are a number of labels (Maggie Sottero etc) that get their dresses made in China (and the quality would be excellent), but I’m not sure how you would find out which factory makes their dresses and whether they would do smaller orders.
I would go for it. I have always wanted to go to China, I’m sure it will be a great experience!

Awesome! When were you thinking of going? I was thinking of 2 weeks in September… 1 or 2 days just looking to see what there is, and then if I don’t find anything then head to Jasmine’s and DressilyMe’s factories, and see if I can get a good deal. I may also buy some silk at the famous silk market and ask them to use that. Apparently you can get nice stuff for about 7GBP a metre (sooo cheap).
My first issue is the visa though… getting one when I’m abroad, and therefore unable to surrender my passport…
