I am taking some pills (short term) that are a little large. The pharmacist recommended swallowing them with a smoothie or other thick drink.
Has anyone heard of this before?
Also the odd thing is, these pills are smaller than other pills that I have to take everyday. Nothing was said about those ones, and I’m taking them to try to help with a sore throat!

I have to take large pills with soda. The bubbles sort of distract me. If I try it with water, I choke on them and they come back up.

Yes, when I clicked on this thread I thought it was going to say “how should I take large pills,” and I was going to suggest taking them with a thick drink! It definitely helps! Not only will the thickness of a smoothie help get the pill down, but the cold will soothe your sore throat!

I don’t have an issue with larger pills, never have. But I do remember when I was little my Mom used to crush them up and put them in some strawberry jam. My best friend just leaves them whole, and puts them in a spoonful of jam. It might be worth trying! 🙂

Thanks! I actually don’t have a problem swallowing them, thank goodness! I just found the advice a little odd.
lol Sometimes I do choke on my tiny BCPs though. Maybe I should use a smoothie for those!

Yes a thick drink helps. If it’s still difficult try putting them in a purée (applesauce pudding, yogurt). If you are fine taking them just with liquid that’s perfectly fine! I am an SLP and work with patients with swallowing disorders 🙂

I suck at swallowing pills. I’ll have to remember to try this the next time I have to take “horse” pills for something.

This is what I do too 🙂 I struggle with swallowing tablets that are paracetamol-sized, but if I take them with squash or juice rather than water, they go down fine. It also helped when I had to take some fairly chunky antibiotics 🙂

@AB Bride: There are certain pills, one antibiotic in particular, that aren’t super large but will burn horrendously going down. I didn’t know this when I took them and I ended up burning my esophagus! Turns out you’re supposed to take it with pudding or yogurt so it slips right down your throat.

I take a ton of pills a day, and am so used to it that it’s never a problem and my phamacist never says anything to me (is it a good or bad sign that when I walk up I never have to tell them my name? Haha.) WHenI was younger and first taking meds daily, my mom would have me take them with food (they were fine to take w/ or w/o food). I would have a bite in my mouth and pitch in the pills. I would sometimes take them with a bit of smoothie as tehy went down easier. Some of my meds (not my usual ones, but I take a few times a year) taste really atrocious, so I tend to take them with a smoothie or yogurt

@AB Bride: I am the same way! I can swallow big pills no problem, but for some reason the teenie tiny ones don’t want to go down lol. I think it is partly because I do not drink anything when I take pills (like how some people put them in their mouth and hold them there and then take a drink)
