I STILL get embarassed if I say shit or fuck in front of my parents, but it does slip out once in a while. Fortunately they just pretend to be shocked and mostly laugh it off, but somehow it feels wrong!

Haha right? I was such a good child. I still don’t swear in front of my parents. I have on ocassion when I was really sad or angry, and I apologized after I said it. I think that’s just because my parents don’t really swear. They are not conservative or uptight at all, but they just don’t. I heard my mom say ‘damnit’ a handful of times growing up, and it shocked me every time because I just never heard her say that.

@Ice_cream:  I think I was like 20 the first time I cursed in front of my mom.  I really do have a potty mouth, but I tone it way down in front of momma. I’m 25 and it still feels weird.  The only time it really ever happens is when I’m talking to her about a conversation that was had with someone else, and I’m telling her what was said.  Oh or when I’m talking to her while I’m driving, and I start getting a little road ragey.  But that’s it.

I don’t think I’ve ever sworn in front of my mother, trust me, I’d remember that smack, those sting. My dad, I have no idea, but I’d bet I was well into my twenties.

We used to get a “Damn it Peach Acid!” or a “Damn it Battery Acid!” if we argued at the table, or didn’t eat our peas and were complaining a LOT.  I also remember hearing my dad say fuck to my mom when I was in fifth grade.

We weren’t allowed to say that sucks or that blows or anything.  We were supposed to say “That rots” lol.  It never worked.  In high school my mom started swearing around us.  The only thing we weren’t allowed to say, or were get called on, was saying anything religious, like jesus christ or whatever.  My mom’s an atheist but she wanted us to respect other people’s religious choices.  I don’t think my dad swears unless he’s angry.

@Ice_cream:  I never swear in my moms house out of habit… She doesn’t really care but I have a sister 7 years younger who idolized me when I lived at home. When I would have been occasionally swearing (16/17) she was paying a lot of attention. If I swore, she would and I didn’t want that. (Foul mouthed 9 year old? Looks real bad at school.)

I’m almost 25 and I dont think I’ve ever cussed in front of my mom. I think I’ve cussed in front of my dad once or twice. It just feels so awkward!

Hm. Accidently I’m sure I did at least once or twice. But I probably began using it in regular language slightly when I was maybe a senior in high school. I might call something/someone “bitchy” in front of my mom. Or call a situation a “load of shit” or something. But VERY seldom and mild, and only in fitting conversation where I knew my mother might be prone to say such a thing!

I do a little more now, but still VERY light. I probably only say shit and bitch in front of them, and it’s rare.

My siblings and I swear quite a bit. Our parents don’t care. We have since we were teenagers.

My mother has the worst potty mouth. She loves “shit” and “fuck”, along with some Jamaican cuss words.

I have only heard my father swear a handful of times in my life.

The first time my parents heard me swear was when I was 21. I was tired of being accused of doing so many things and all the sexist rules, so I told my mother to FUCK OFF when she was laying into me. Sometimes bullies need to get it back.
