Cake and punch receptions used to be the norm for what a wedding is.  They can be lots of fun and quite successful.

They’re best had in the afternoon so guests sort of know what to expect, but can be fantastic!

Good luck!!

I think this would be fine. Personally, the sweets are my favorite part of any wedding, so I certainly wouldn’t mind as a guest. I don’t think anyone should feel obligated to have any particular thing at their wedding (including food). I agree with PP who said you should take this into consideration when you choose the time of day. I wouldn’t have it at a time when people will expect dinner.

I think it would be okay if it were a few hours before people eat dinner or a few hours after. I think most people attending an evening wedding expect to be fed dinner.

I think if you did it around 3 or 4 in the afternoon and it was over by 7 it would be okay.

I SOOOOOO wanted a cake and punch reception maybe some hors d’oeuvres, but sadly all the venues we looked at for us required a catering min. Frown I envy you!

I’m doing sweets/punch/hors d’oeuvres. I would have been perfectly happy with just sweets and punch but my Fiance really wanted food there since he isn’t a big sweets person. I think punch and desserts sound yummy!

Yes, our reception will start around 3:30 and only last a couple of hours. Hopefully it will work!!

It can be fantastic. You just have to make sure that it doesn’t span a typical meal tioversold over by 5 starting after 1:30. or starting after 7:30.

I wouldn’t suggest starting at 3:30 unless you want it to be over by 5 ish, as people will expect meals at that time.
