-TLDR at bottom! Sorry it’s so long-
So I had the nexplanon implant put in 2 1/2 years ago and it was great- loved not having to worry about birth control and felt pretty great that first year.
In the second year, I ended up gaining 40 lbs, which I attributed to unhealthy habits, however I have noticed a marked appetite increase and a big energy drop as well. I was on my thyroid medication and ended up getting a dose increase at the time so I also attributed some of those issues to that.
Into the third year now, and things are getting much worse. I’ve always suffered from PMDD which is why at first I loved the nexplanon (no periods) but in this third year they have (sort of?) come back. I will get all the symptoms of a period- break outs, headaches, PMDD (which is way more severe now than I remember), cramps, etc, and sometimes I’ll Bleed but others I won’t. It’s really hard sometimes to tell if my moods are hormonal or not, and I used to blame them on my job or other tangible things. I ended up getting a mood tracker and it turns out that they are definitely more cyclical- and not really related to any outside reason (kept track of work load etc and does not correspond to moods at all).
Well, this past month I ended up spotting/bleeding on and off every 4-5 days. 5 days off, 5 days on. Really light bleeding so I’m not too concerned with that, but I’ve gotten to a place where I’m having suicidal thoughts and calling in sick due to migraine (headaches have always been a hormonal struggle for me).
So I finally made an appointment to get the damn thing out, and I can’t wait. I am excited to see just how much of my problems/symtoms are related to this. When I spoke to my gyno he said that what I’m going through is really common in the last year of Nexplanon and he ends up taking it out early in almost every one of his patients due to these same reasons. So I’m somewhat confident that I’ll start feeling a bit more like myself once it’s out.
My gyno suggested I go on Lo loestrine which is a low dose hormone birth control that is supposed to be good for PMDD but does not stop your periods. I’m a bit worried about that part as that was one of the reasons I did the nexplanon, was because of the lack of periods. I want to research it but I know that usually the people who leave reviews are the ones who feel really strongly negative about it, and not so much your average experience.
Nexplanon has been causing me issues and I’m having it taken out and switching to Lo loestrine. Has anybody had any experiences with either of these?
