You should post this on the Austin local board! I think Thursday evening-Sunday would be better than Friday evening-Sunday. There’s really nothing happening on the Sunday of SXSW so if you got in late Friday night you would really only have one day–Saturday–to see shows. Are you thinking of buying wristbands, or just trying to find free shows? If you want to buy a wristband it’s not worth it just for one day. A lot of the best stuff is during thre day on Thuesday and Friday, in my opinion anyway.

But if you’re not interested in seeing a lot of shows, I think you should just pick a different weekend. Hotels and flights for that weekend are so expensive, and the city is a crowded nightmare–packed with out-of-towners. If you’re less into the music element of SXSW and just want to see Austin you should pick another weekend and stay at the Austin Motel or Hotel San Jose.

For Festivals like that, I find the most popular shows are Thursday, Friday, Saturday. There might be a few shows on Sunday, but usually they aren’t as big. If you can make it for the Friday evening shows, it should be fine.

Generally, Thurs, Friday, and Sat are the big shows. If you get there in time to see some shows on Friday, then I think it would absolutely be worth it – there are SO many shows going on during SXSW that you’ll definitely get to see a good amount on just Friday night and Saturday!

SXSW doesn’t have just good music shows- I went to some really cool art stuff too. They have all kinds of things. The only problem is that Austin is pretty insane during that weekend. Like, REALLY insane. I visited my Fiance then, and it was during spring break so all the undergrads had left, but were replaced by all the folks coming for the shows, lol. Lots of fun though! And Austin has tons of other cool stuff to do too, in between shows. 🙂
