I don’t really have a place that I could recommend for wedding dresses (I had mine done in my bridal salon) but I’d start looking in areas that have a lot of bridal stores in a cluster (ie; the Dymocks bldg and the CBD or the bridal shops along Parramatta rd in Leichhardt).

I got mine done at the salon I bought my dress from (Brides of Sydney), but they also recommended Top Stitch Alterations in the CBD.  FWIW, I was really happy with the work Brides of Sydney did on my dress – could be worth finding out if they will alter dresses not bought there.  The price was capped at $350 as well, which made budgeting easier.  Pretty sure mine would have cost more had it not been capped due to having to unpick the lace appliques around the hem, hem the dress (by about a foot!) then sew the appliques back on.

I had my dress alltered by Ping from Dresssence at Miranda (where I purchased my dress) she was great and did a really good job. I think if you contact your local bridal store they may be able to provide you with a contacts for alterations. It just depends how busy they are if they will take on clients who havent purchased the dress from the store. I am sure my seamstress mentioned altering dresses for people who had that brought them online.
