Here is my dilemma. I’m in a job I tolerate. I don’t necessarily hate it but I don’t love it. There are aspects about my job I love and I’m greatful for, for one thing I got nursing experience/knowledge I wouldn’t have normally gotten. I can’t stand one of my co-workers though and while she’s much older than me I will have to put up with her for at least 6 more years before she retires. I also don’t like that I sit at a desk all day. I’m used to nursing jobs that are a little more active.
The job I had before this job is open again (I was working in a clinic and the doctor transferred to another hospital out of state. They didn’t get anyone hired right away so I had to transfer to another dept.). Well they are hiring someone again and I would love to go back up there. I know the job (it’s only a year since I had to transfer). I get along with everyone I worked with, I was never in the same place twice in a week (went between General Surgery at 3 hospitals, Bariatrics and Breast Clinic).
My issue is at my current job I’m the youngest out of the 3 other girls I work with (4 if you include my manager). They are all about 10 years or less from retiring. I may have a good chance to get a promotion (however, they don’t go by seniority so I may be passed up if someone else came down here to work that they thought would be a better manager). I do have my Bachelors in Business Management which may help me but its not a requirement for Manager of Admissions (my bosses title). I also make more money where I’m at because I’m considered a “hospital” employee instead of “clinic” as I was in my other job.
In my current job there isn’t as much flexibility with my hours (no overtime, have to put in PTO requests 2 months in advance) where as in the clinic if I needed a day off without much notice my boss was understanding, PTO only needed to be in 2 weeks in advance (usually) I could get overtime, I could come in whenever (as long as I didn’t have clinic) and leave when I wanted (again as long as I didn’t have patients and my work was done). I also could take longer lunches.
So do I take a pay cut, and possibly never advance in my career as I’ve always hoped to go back to the clinic that I love. Or stay in a job that I tolerate that makes better money and I may possibly one day get a promotion.
What would you guys all do?
