I’m just so excited and happy! He proposed yesterday, but the entire day was just WONDERFUL!
First, I was sick for 7 days (not sure what was wrong, but I felt awful) – and by some miracle when I woke up yesterday I finally was feeling better. It was an extra bonus that he spent several hours laying in bed just snuggling with me as I drifted in an out of sleep (he isn’t very snuggly, so that was pure bliss). He got up around 7:30 and said he really needed to go to work for a half-day (which is very common for him on the weekend, so I thought nothing of it and slept for a few more hours). Around 11:00 I got a text that said he didn’t feel like working anymore and that he was coming home and that we should go for a hike in the nature preserve by the lot we purchased (something we do occasionally and he knows that I love, it is the most beautiful place I know of – not only is it beautiful up there but you can see for miles, over the Mississippi and the surrounding cities and it overlooks our lot).
We drove out there, he grabbed his bag and water and we chatted as we hiked to the top. (A climb that gets up about 600 feet in elevation from the start of the trail) When we got to the top we sat down on a picnic bench that has a perfect view of our lot, enjoyed some water and the nice breeze. The last time we were up there he was teasing me about kicking a tree (or putting his foot on a tree that hangs out over a very steep hill) and so he walked over by the tree and I immediately set my water down and told him that wasn’t happening and walked over by him. Then, being a brat, I decided I would show him why it was a bad idea and I inched towards the tree to kick it myself (which ended up being me being a wuss and gently nudging it with my toe, he laughed at me).
He then offered me his hand to help me back up safely… and took my left hand, and suddenly got down on one knee. (He said he was going to write down what he said and email it to me so I knew exactly what he said, as my memory is useless). He said wonderful things about how in front of the cities and where we are going to start our family (because we were overlooking our lot) he wanted to do this, that he had been happier in the last year than he ever had before and had known he wanted to do this for a long time – and he asked me to marry him! I, of course, said yes. (I focused so hard on trying to remember what he said, since so many bees said they couldn’t remember, that I didn’t cry – which is very surprising because I can be quite pathetic when it comes to happy tears, the smallest things have been known to get my eyes wet). He gently slid the ring on my finger and then, as fitting to my character, I blurted out “now I really want us to carve our names into this tree!” (the one I had tapped with my shoe) … and he said he had something to show me, and on the tree next to the picnic table he had already carved our initials!
He then said he had already hidden things up here, and he dissappeared for a moment and came back with a cooler and flowers that he had hidden up there earlier! Apparently it had taken him *THREE* trips to get everything up there (turns out he had not gone to work after all!), so the trip with me was actually his FOURTH time up there! I would’ve been exhausted, but he was a good at hiding it.
He had all of my favorite things in the cooler – raspberry wine, pickles, pineapple, carrots, and cheddar cracker chips. As silly as those items sound, they really are my favorite things and he could not have done better.
He just kept saying how happy he was (and I was so happy too), he even confessed that he almost cried (he didn’t – but he was very shocked that it almost happened… as we were sitting there I noticed his eyes did look a little moist). He said that he had planned a much more elaborate proposal (had reserved a very nice hotel room, booked a fancy restaurant to cater a picnic, and hired a photographer… but it would’ve been in a beautiful place on the other side of the state). Then he realized that having it somewhere that, once we build our house, we will be able to see every day when we come home would be so much more special. Because every day we will be able to look up and remember that we got engaged up there – somewhere we will be able to see from our house. He could not have picked a more perfect spot, I’m so happy he chose this more simple (and still more romantic and thoughtful approach) than the other elaborate plan. This one was just perfect and so much more fitting for us (and more personal, there was no one else around the entire time). And the weather yesterday was PERFECT!
Our initials, which I just love that he did – his parents and brother/sister in law did the same thing and he knows I have been excited about getting to do the same thing since I learned about their trees (you can even kind of see our lot in the background!).
My ring is perfect! It is the most beautiful ring I have ever seen, I love every aspect of it.
The center stone is certified and is F-color, 1.44 carats, ideal cut, si2 (eye-clean). The mounting has 1.31 carats of vs1/vs2 g/h diamonds. The only thing I have been confused about is why the center stone looks a bit warm (which Fiance just noticed this morning and is a little bothered about) – I may be confused (partially worried that he may have been lied to and thus paid more for it than he should have, but it is beautiful either way), but he is mistaken if he thinks he can get this ring back from me! It is mine and I love it exactly how it is! Also, I noticed that the diamonds in the middle going down the side seem to be “invisible” set, which is really cool and a little scary.
I’ve never seen anything sparkle as much as this ring. (though I’m glad the sun wasn’t out when I took the pictures or all you’d be able to see is a flash and not my ring!)
