No litterbox!  That’s because cat poop can have Toxoplasma, a parasite which causes all kinds of in utero infections.  Doesn’t mean you can’t feed your cats, just no emptying the litterbox.

I know nothing of limitations on caring for dogs, so don’t worry about it.  Walk them (good exercise for yourself), use a plastic bag to pick up the poop, feed them, etc.  I wouldn’t roll around in their waste (eww) but there are no issues with dogs.  And with cats it’s only because of that parasite.

I never heard anything about dogs, I picked up my dog’s poo all the time while pregnant. I think the hardest part about that was in late pregnancy when I couldn’t bend over anymore, but no risk to the health.

I’m pretty sure the only issue is for cats.  I have a pet rabbit, and apparently I can still clean his litter box b/c there’s no risk of toxoplasmosis.  I was kind of hoping that I would have an excuse to make Darling Husband deal with bunny’s litter box while I’m pregnant, but apparently I’m out of luck.

hm, my OB office said no cleaning up after any rodents in addition to cats.  i have a rabbit too, and my husband has been cleaning up after him.  i’d rather be on the safe side.

MY doctor told me it was okay to clean the litter box if I wore gloves and/or washed my hands really well afterwards.

I have done it about 2 times my whole pregnancy, but my husband mostly does it.

@ustechie: I, too, read not to clean up after rodents. We have two guinea pigs. I will not be cleaning the cage when I’m pregnant. That will be solely my husband’s job!

Yep no cleaning litter boxes. My Darling Husband hates, hates having to do it. LOL oh well it is good for him! Now only if he would remember to clean it out so I wouldn’t have to remind him.
