I registered at Target mostly because it is convenient and sells many things, ie. patio furniture, gardening tools, etc for a couple who already has a lot of stuff for inside the home. I didn’t need china or pots and pans and that stuff, so this made sense (or so I thought). It has been nothing but a nightmare and I urge any bride that is thinking of registering at Target to go elsewhere!
Some gifts were sent to my house multiple times – Target did not keep track of who was buying off the registry. I also opened several duplicates at my bridal shower which made me uncomfortable and I felt bad for the guests who gave them. When I tried to return them without a receipt, I was told that I could only return one ($70 value) per drivers license without a gift receipt. The cashier told me I should bring my mom, fiancee, whoever to help me return stuff to avoid this. She also said I should tell my guests to always attach the gift receipt. UH I am not calling my guests to tell them that! So I have a pile of gifts that I can’t return because I have no receipt and have reached this arbitrary limit for returning, and they arent sold anywhere but Target. Unless I want to enlist the assistance of 20 of my closest friends to use their drivers’ licenses to get the return credit.
I have read every word of Target’s return policy, including the gift registry provisions, and no where does it indicate a specific monetary limit for returning without a receipt, particularly off a gift registry. If I had known this before I would have never registered here.
One person sent me a luggage set from Target online (another duplicate!), and it was delivered to me in a box with no packing slip, no receipt, no message as to who it was from. I had no idea who sent it, and could not return it because I didn’t have a receipt. How am I supposed to thank someone for a gift when I don’t know who it is from? I spent 20 minutes on the phone with Target trying to find out who bought this item, and I was told to call back tomorrow because the “system” is down. I called back the next day (another 30 minutes) and got the name of the gift giver, thank god, but no receipt or packing slip. They said I have to call the gift giver to get the receipt – and I am NOT doing that. How rude. So now I have 2 sets of luggage and I am unable to return either because I have no gift receipts.
Anyway, just please take my advice and don’t register at Target. I also registered at Bed, Bath and Beyond and besides having a few things out of stock, it was a smooth and pleasant experience. Try them or another similar place unless you want nothing but headaches from Target.

Thanks for the advice! I wonder how Macy’s and Bed Bath and Beyond are?

I registered at target. If you print your registry (they have the printer there) you should be able to return them if they are on your list. I hated registering at target for a few of the reasons you mentioned above. It was just super annoying to deal with. I also was only allowed to get the sale price on a couple of the items when I know it was full price at the time of purchase.

I used to work at Target and we always made sure to get people who registered at least something for the items they returned. Yes this may mean sale prices because there is no way they can know that they were paid for at full value without a gift reciept. Honestly I think you’re going to have issues no matter where you go. Also it depends on who is working.

Oddly I did print the registry and have them look up the item on the list. But they still stuck to their monetary limit on returns because I had no receipt. So I was only able to return one of the 3 items I brought that day to return. It is so confusing. I agree, they are super annoying!!
BBB was great in my opinion. Can’t speak personally for Macy’s but I know a lot of friends that registered there and don’t seem to be having problems.

Good point, maybe if I try a different Target I might get different results. Although I shouldn’t have to do that…but if it means I can get any kind of store credit for these items I will do it.

I was warned by a friend to not register at Target for the reasons you posted. Sorry to hear you are having such a horrible experience with them. I opted to register at BBB and Crate & Barrel.

I am still dealing with Target returns and we are now having to use my DH’s license because I already met my limit for the year on non-receipted returns.
The thing that really ticked me off is all the duplicates. I got so many duplicates (three to four of the same thing) and Target makes no exceptions for this. If you registered for one wall clock and got four they will only allow you to return one wall clock using your registry as a receipt. The other three that you didn’t register for (since I’m assuming no one registers for four wall clocks) must be returned as non-receipted items that go towards your maximum yearly allowance.
Just last week I had to fight with them because despite returning $30.00 worth of goods that they supposedly gave me store credit for the card that supposedly had the store credit on it was totaling $0.00 when I went to use it for the first time. It took me over 30 minutes and I dealt with several different people until they finally relented and gave me in-store cash ($3.00 x 10 cash coupons). This was the SECOND time this had happened, the first time was for $7.00 and the card came up as totaling $0.00 (which I overlooked thinking I had made a mistake and used it without thinking).
Yeah I am ready to scream they are so frustrating! I highly recommend Bed, Bath and Beyond they have been absolutely amazing and so accommodating with all our of returns.

Oh man I registered there and now I’m nervous. I did the majority at BBB so target only has about 20 items…FI’s grandma just stuffed all the shower invites so I’m sure there is no turning back now

I saw the title of this post and was like BLASPHEMY!
I have heard their registry is awful.
@Artificial-Sweetener: I registered at Macys and it was very pleasant. No dupes, I received broken glasses in the mail once and they took them back no questions asked. Cash back perks were half decent (discount after the wedding was a joke).
Crate and Barrel was pleasant too but their prices are higher and the boxes they pack everything in are no joke. I had so much trouble at my shower haha.

@LGenz: LOL I know, I love Target to shop at, but NOT to register at.

Thank you, you explained the “policy” way better than I did as far as the dupes and the non-receipted item limit. Not that I am glad you had a hard time but at least I know it wasn’t just me.

@lolitapbg: Such a shame to hear because I love Target stores – love their home items especially. However, this does not surprise me. Their online ordering isnt the best and twice now I’ve purchased items online to send to friend who just had a baby and when I included a “gift message” it’s only assigned to one item unless you do it for each item in the order. The problem was the order was split and sent in 2 speerate deliveries and the recipient had no idea who one shipment was from because my “gift message” was in the other shipement of course. After hearing your story, I would highly recommend speaking with someone at the 800 number, not with the store directly and explaining what happened. A company, especially one like Target, should not be run this poorly. If they agree to have this service, it should work properly. Keep us posted!

@LGenz: A lot of why I registered at Macys was the convenience and excellent return policy for gift registries.
OP, I hate returning things to Target normally, and I’ve heard so manu terrible things about their registry. It’s a shame, because now that I’m pregnant, it would be so nice to have a baby registry there, but it just seems like it’s not worth it.

I’m glad for this thread. I think we’ll be deleting our Target registry and doing a BB&B one instead. I thought Target was the better choice because there are stores EVERYWHERE – but this sounds like a nightmare. No thanks! BB&B has everything we’d want from Target and more, plus they always send out those 20% off coupons, so our guests could probably get a good deal on items…
