I did not have to pay a tasting fee in New York.

Several bakeries I’ve seen have “Open House” nights where you can go and try all their cakes for free.

That’s weird – they shouldn’t be doing that. I didn’t pay for consultation or tasting, and they sent us home with extra cupcakes!

Wow!  Minimum of $30 is just way too much, considering you’re only getting a slice or a cupcake (I assume)!!

I’ve noticed that cupcake bakeries around here aren’t keen on free cake/cupcake tasting.  A few places in Boston won’t let us taste unless we booked with them first.  Ugh.

We were able to get a cake tasting with a bakery known for their wedding cakes and are willing to make cupcakes instead.  They did the whole cake tasting session for free (we had a lot of cake to try) AND let us take mini pastries home. Score!  The price of their cupcakes were also significantly cheaper and they decorated just how we wanted them.

That seems like it might be cheaper just to go buy a dozen cupcakes in their assorted flavors!

I was about to post this same thing. I never realized places charged for tastings. Our venue did it for free, but now that we’ve started looking for cakes, there are charges of $25+

I’m better off just buying cupcakes to taste. Jeez.

I tasted quite a bit of cake (never knew it was that hard to make good cake!) but I only paid for the one that showed up at our wedding.

Most bakeries that I’ve beeen to don’t charge for their tasting and the one that did, I think it was like $5 for a mini cake that was probably equivalent to 4 cupcakes!

Our cake tasting was free. I felt guilty about it and ended up buying cupcakes to take home (which I would have done anyway- we had them before we were engaged and they were amazing!)

I haven’t seen any places here charging for a tasting, that’s how they get your business, by having tasty cakes.
