So I got this on my ankle like 2 months after my separation. Today I have a love/dislike relationship with it. I LOVE that I was spontaneous for once in my ultra methodical life and did the unthinkable- a tattoo! and that it basically represents that I am my own person no matter what, and i will never let someone else dictate who i am or what Iʻm worth.  On the flipside, I cant beleive I actually got a tatoo during such a timultuous time for no good reason other than “i liked it” and had a vodka martini in me, and that it is there FOREVER and im planning another wedding to someone else- so wonʻt be totally “free” for long.

I only dislike one tattoo out of 6 and I plan on getting it covered up eventually. I would post them, but I am too paranoid of getting identified, ha.

Let me just say first; I have a lot of tattoos. Apart from the 6 running the length of my spine after the fashion of a totem pole on my skin, I also have one on either hip.

They’re all bascially always hidden under my clothes, but they definitely take up a lot of real-estate. I recognize most people don’t go as far as I did.

While I don’t regret getting them, if I had it to do over, I wouldn’t. I was really young when I started getting inked and it quickly became a project. I had spiritual and aesthetic reasons for wanting them, but they were also ritual self-torture. I tended to get another tattoo every time my heart was broken… They were lessons; memories living in my flesh.

Now, the things I wanted to remember are worth remembering. And I think as a whole, they’re beautiful, and meaningful, and awesome. But…

Trying to find a wedding gown that covers them? Nigh on impossible.

This isn’t the primary reason I feel like I would choose differently, though. Mostly, it’s because I wish I still had the long curve of my back untrammeled. I wish when I walked past a mirror naked it wasn’t the primary thing I noticed about my body.

I don’t dislike my tattoos, and I don’t regret them, but I have a different perspective about them than I did when I was younger. All a part of getting older, I suppose.

🙂

I have 3, 2 of the 3 I love. The other one I got while drunk on my 21st birthday. It isn’t horrible, but it definitely isn’t of the same calibre as my others. I will be getting it covered next year. This is my favorite one, along with DH’s. We got them a few weeks apart. Didn’t mean to get matching tattoos, but it just sort of worked out that way. We match as people too lol.

I have a few and I love them all! The oldest is about 4 years old, the newest is just over a month old. My only complaint is that the newest is unfinished (still needs color or shading, not sure which yet). I was hoping to have it finished before the wedding, but I didn’t want a tattoo that fresh during our honeymoon, so it’ll have to wait until around Halloween. It was freshly done in this picture (sorry it’s so huge!!!)

desertgypsy :  Love love LOVE your mariner’s compass.

I had thought LONG AND HARD about having one tattooed under my left breast over my heart. Didn’t end up doing it, but still love the look and symbolism.

teamroro :  Thanks! It is my favorite. I am a wilderness guide and thought it was appropriate for me and my life. To me it symbolizes a bunch of stuff like trusting myself and my intuition and my own abilities. Which is one of the reasons North is pointing away from me instead of toward me…like “let’s go THAT way” both metaphorically and actually 😉

I have 4. I feel like I like the newest one the best each time I get one. But I don’t regret any of them. Maybe some aspects of the design I would change if I could do them over again, but the general concept/placement I’d keep for all of them.

I actually JUST got home from covering up the only tattoo that I’ve ever regretted (an infinity tattoo with love scripted in on my wrist, thanks Pinterest). I love all of my other tattoos (10 total) and I’m really happy with my decision to cover up my wrist piece because it was a stupid tattoo that I got because it was a $20 apprentice special.

beachykeenbee :  I have 6, technically 7 if you count my coverup. I have 4 that I love still and the other ones are so small I forget about them 90% of the time. Here is my newest one:

I’ll be adding more on the 13th!

I have 1 tattoo that I’ve had for 8 years that I’d like to have lasered off. Thankfully, its covered by clothing so no one but me & DH ever see it. If it was always on display, I would have lasered it off years ago. I won’t be getting anymore!
