Hey bees! I will try to make this the least complicated as I can.
My new hubby and I were recently married and I ended up getting a new job after. When given my W4, my manager had me fill it out in the shop instead of taking it home to talk it over with Darling Husband… I had no idea how to file, so I quickly read through the form and filed “Married Filing Separate” with 1 exemption (I think that’s how it works?)…
I just decided to google how to file when married and I am thoroughly confused. Since I filed “Married Filing Separate” on my W4, do I now have to file my taxes separately, or can I file jointly with DH? I think I read on the boards here somewhere that filling out a W4 and filing taxes are two completely different things and that the W4 just lets your workplace know how much to deduct from each paycheck for taxes.
Alongside this, does Darling Husband also need to re-fill out a new W4, or was that just me since my name has changed?
Please explain in lamens terms! All this tax preparer speak has my head about to implode. Thanks in advance for your help (:
