@kkish3:  I am a teacher in Georgia, and I went through school in PA, where I had to take Praxis series tests. I am a special education/ elementary education teacher. We were required to take our tests before student teaching, so I did mine the summer before my last year of school.

When I took them I felt very nervous about how I had done, but when I got my scores back they were a lot better than I expected. My boyfriend and roommate are also teachers and they felt the same way. So, you probably will do better than you will feel like you did!

I know a couple of people that had to take them more than once, but not many, and you have given yourself plenty of time, so you will be okay! Take a deep breath and trust in everything you’ve learned so far. Good luck!!

@kkish3:  I took the Praxis II – Elementary Education – Content Knowledge test a couple of weeks ago. After hearing that a fair percentage of people weren’t passing on their first try, I started getting pretty nervous.

The test ended up being considerably easier than either of the two practice tests I had taken. I passed with a score far above the requirement so I was super happy!

Is there a test guide you can get from the library or a bookstore?

I have had to take the Praxis I and II to be certified and highly qualified in New Hampshire. I used the study guides I think you can get online and also had a book that I studied over. Took the practice tests, etc, etc. It ended up being easier than I thought and I scored better than I thought I would. I felt as though I was overprepared in the amount of time I put in studying but I was happy I did.

I agree with everything QueenofPotato said. I’m also a special ed/elementary ed major who took the Praxis II tests. I too had to take the tests before student teaching, and I took mine about eight months before my student teaching was scheduled. Earlier would have certainly been ideal though because I would have been slightly rushed if I failed. I changed my major late in the game, so I took them as soon as I could. I think it’s great that you’re giving yourself ample time.

I know a few people who had to retake the tests a few times, but the vast majority pass on the first try. None of the tests I’ve taken were as hard as I or DH (same major) expected, and we scored much higher than the minimum on all of them (not trying to brag, just giving a reference for gauging difficulty). DH has also taken the Secondary Biology test and felt it was fairly easy also, so I don’t think it’s limited to elementary/special ed. We’re taking another one tomorrow because Alabama just added it as a requirement, so hopefully I won’t have to eat those words.

We just used the online guide to study for all the tests we’ve taken, so I think you’ll be fine with that also.

@kkish3:  Congratulations to you! I just passed my Basic Skills last month, I would love to be as far along as you are=] It’s great that you have your tests out of the way and can now focus on what you need to do to finish up! Best of luck!!

I’m a certified teacher in Alabama.  I had to take the Alabama Prospective Teacher’s Test and the Praxis.  The APTT was pretty easy.  I didn’t study for it and passed it with flying colors.  It was just general knowledge in Math, Reading, and listening to a recording and writing what it said.  Pretty easy.

The Praxis was tough.  I studied.  I bought a Praxis Study Guide from Amazon.  I took 0081 – Social Science General Content.  Fortunately, the first time I took it, I passed it.  I know several people who have had to take it over and over again to pass it.

My advise is to find someone who has taken the test you are going to take and see how hard it is.

ETA: Oops. Just realized how old this was and saw your update.  Congrats on passing!  🙂

I took both Praxis tests in Wisconsin to get my Wisconsin license.  I’m getting my Illinois license now.. And have to take three more tests.  A basic skills, and two more praxis like equivalents.  The thing that really gets me is they won’t accept my praxis scores, but if my high school ACT or SAT score was high enough, I dontt have to pass the basic skills test.  UGH, what a bitch.
