Hi Teacher Bees!
I just started my student teaching this week! What a wonderful and crazy week it’s been! Anyway, I’m in a teaching credential and master’s program and today we had the Los Angeles Unified School District HR people speak to our class about how bleak the job situation is. They even said that a lot of smaller school districts aren’t actually hiring teachers with masters degrees because they cost too much and they simply don’t have it in their budget. Anyway, I’m still continuing with my degree, as I think it will help me greatly in teaching. I was wondering, though, what degree(s) do you have? (I’m assuming you all have bachelor’s so I mean post-undergrad)

I’ve heard the same things. Can you start teaching with your credential and then pick up your MEd after you secure a job?
I taught with a MA + credits in my subject. I was a high school teacher at a charter.

I’m Canadian and I have the first level of certification available in Ontario, a bachelor of education. It’s a 1 year program that comes after you get a degree–so I did a four year history program, then 1 year bachelor of education.
It’s also very hard to get a job in Ontario–I moved overseas instead. Haven’t regreted it for a minute.

I have a BS in Education and a BA in Social Sciences. I am certified to teach General Special Ed K-12 and Elem Ed. I am currently a Special Ed teacher in an Elementary school. No Masters and not working on it. However, I have actually NOT been hired for jobs before because I didn’t have my masters. I think it all depends on who is hiring you and what they are looking for.

Charter schools in LA are GROWING and HIRING! I was pink slipped from LAUSD after my first year (2008-2009) and found a job with a great charter org.
To answers your question: I went to The University of Hartford because they have an education program where at the end of your 4 years of undergrad you have your credential. My degree says “Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Behavioral Studies”

@LionLove: Yeah, I’ve been told by my advisors and professors that I’ll most likely be hired at a charter school. I have mixed feelings about charters, but at this point, I’ll take any job for 2012-13!
