I’ve not heard of this and it seems weird, per person? The only thing I can think of is this is their weird way of covering waitstaff for the dinner but even IF that is true, its really high.

Maybe its a mistake?

Good luck, bee!

thesummerangel:  I’d ask them what services that covers. If service and gratuity aren’t included, I have no clue what it could be (except them wanting to charge 140 per head instead of 100).

That is so odd.  I have a technical support fee for my venue, but it’s actually for the lighting equipment and sound system, which is a tech you have on call in addition to the DJ, but it’s a few hundred bucks and NOT per head.

So weird.  I would definitely get what it is in writing.  That’s really high, like an extra meal high!

Well.. if that’s your bartender and servers, then that’s not so bad.. (I’m paying $1500 just for servers/bartender for 50 people, on top of food–and we are NOT having a plated dinner, we just need servers to pass hors d’ouvres and refill glasses and remove dirty napkins/glasses/empty bottles).  Service fee is basically gratuity, in that case.

That’s a 40% increase over your per plate fee! That’s outrageous. That’s bait and switch.

I sincerely hope that’s a typo and you meant to say a $4 per person technical support fee on top of your price per person, service charge, and taxes. Otherwise, that is an outrageous “hidden” costs with which to hit someone after a price per person has been established. Most people know to expect a 20 percent service fee, but not a 40 percent fee for something they’ve never heard of before.

I would ask them what the fee is actually for, like a description of what that fee covers. If it doesnt make sense to you, I would find another venue.

Like a pp said, if it were a couple hundred dollars to cover a tech person for lighting/electrical/sound system issues then ok. But $40 per person? Thats outrageous

thesummerangel:  Very strange. The only thing that I would have thought it might be is staffing costs for serving etc. but it would be very odd for that to be charged on a per person basis – it would normally be worked out as one total based on the length of your event, style of food service, and the number of guests. Will be very interested to hear what your venue says it covers!

Just as an aside, I would make very sure that you know EXACTLY what is and isn’t covered in your ‘per head’ cost before signing this contract, as your venue sounds like the kind that could email you 10 days before the wedding and say ‘Oh, the extra $20 per person charge for BYO that we’ve never discussed previously is due tomorrow’…

My guess would be a fee for plates and silverware? 🙁 I don’t know but that’s an outrageous fee for anything! I’d probably walk away over a venue’s B.S. like that. Please come back and tell us when you figure it out

thesummerangel:  I’m really curious to see the update when it comes!  I’m actually really curious about the reactions by other bees…

Every single caterer I’ve contacted posts their per plate price online and gives me a quote at least 2-3x the simply “food” fee… The food literally just covers the food, the rest is beverages, bartender, servers, kitchen staff, etc…  It’s been super annoying, because I can’t judge at all based on the food prices that are posted online what the final quote might be… but it did seem standard, since literally every single caterer did this.

Anyway, thats why my initial reaction was “oh, well yeah… its just servers/bartenders/etc..” because an extra 40% on food seems like nothing compared to all of the caterers I’ve talked to (and seriously I feel like I asked every single caterer in Seattle… and then decided screw this i’m getting wood-oven pizza and hiring my staff seperately!)
