We went looking at rings about month before the proposal and he did buy the one I fell in love with! The main diamond was his grandmothers that passed soon after we started dating. His parents had it and about 6 months before the proposal they gave it to us saying we could use it in a ring if we so wished.
It was Christmas Eve 2012. We were celebrating Christmas with the my mom’s side of the family. Everyone just finished opening presents, I opened his present and it was a lovely new scarf with polka dots (my favorite), and had started to clean up and the kids were getting out their new toys to start playing with them. I was sitting on the couch talking with family and he was sitting in the chair just to the side of me. He stands up and says “Actually, there is one more present to give out tonight.” I instantly knew what was happening, my hands went to my mouth in shock and I started crying. At the time I had no idea what Patrick was saying to me. Except the end “(he said my full name), will you be my beloved wife?” I had a hard time answering because I was crying and so much in shock. Then, of course I said yes.

OH! Awesome thread! I’ll jump in!
We had been dating almost five years and that day I had lost my job. He said that we could do whatever I wanted that night to make me feel better so I said Disneyland. The park had just closed and when I came out of the bathroom by the side of the castle he was sitting on the bench. He handed me the box and said “I think you could use this.” I was laughing and cying so hard that he worried I was going to pass out. Some random guy walking by gave us a high five and said “Way to go man.” At some point I think I dropped the ring, but it was pretty much all a blur.
My wedding band (currently under construction):

We got engaged April 19, 2012. I’d finished my last final exam for my Bachelors degree that day and to celebrate, he took me to a tobyMac concert. I picked him up at his house and he seemed a little distracted, but he’d just finished work so I figured that was it. Just before we left, he ran back upstairs for about 5 mins and wouldn’t say what he forgot.
Before the concert, we went out for dinner and he wouldn’t let me choose where like he normally does. He chose Qdoba (which I love anyway so it was great). The concert was phenomenal and we had a great time. After the concert, we walked out behind the venue, and there was a gazebo overlooking a pond. So we walked over there and Darling Husband started dancing with me. After a while we sat on the picnic table and just started talking. We’d been talking about getting married for months at this point and I knew a ring was coming soon, but since I graduated in 2 weeks, I figured it would be then.
Darling Husband asked me how I felt about our relationship and the direction we were going (marriage). It was a pretty common question for us, so I didn’t think anything about it. I told him that I was really happy with him and that I was excited for when we could actually start planning everything and not just dreaming about it. He said “Me too. So excited I don’t want to wait anymore.” Next thing I knew he was down on one knee with a gorgeous ring. I had no idea he’d bought a ring or anything! I said Yes! and threw my arms around him, without even putting the ring on first which made him laugh.
Turns out that he had run upstairs to call his parents and tell them he was popping the question that night and had planned out our night so we could go to Qdoba for dinner since that was our first date. We called both sets of parents and they were super excited.
My center stone is from his great-grandma’s engagement ring. the setting is new to me. I didn’t help in choosing it at all. he totally surprised me. For some reason I can’t upload a photo, but trust me. It’s gorgeous 🙂
