We went to Santorini for our honeymoon and LOVED it! Such a beautiful and romantic place. If you’re after a more secluded, peaceful experience but still want a caldera view, I would definintely echo staying in Imerovigli instead of Oia or Fira. It’s in the middle of the island, and in my opinion the sunset view was even more beautiful from our balcony than when we braved the crowds and saw it from Oia. We loved our hotel, Irida, it was at the top of the caldera so it was more private and had the best view! Even better, the owners are the sweetest people you will ever meet, as well as incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Like many hotels in the area, it also included a beautiful breakfast on the balcony every morning, and for us it was a perfect combination of affordable luxury.

I definintely recommend doing the walk/hike along the caldera! We walked from our hotel in Imerovigli to Oia and it took a few hours with us stopping to take in so many beautiful views. Once in Oia we walked down the steps to Ammoudi Bay, where you can swim and/or cliff-jump into the Aegean, and eat THE freshest calamari ever. Pito Gyros is also a good option for a quick, affordable bite back up in Oia. We loved Atlantis bookstore that PP mentioned, and watched the sunset (with a whole lot of other people). If you watch the sunset in Oia and are staying elsewhere, don’t try to take the bus right away as the lines will be ridiculous – get gelato instead! We had gelato at Lolita before heading back – it was delicious and the staff was hilarious.

A few other random things we did:

  • visited Akrotiri – the Greek pompeii
  • We went on a boat tour that included visiting the volcano, swimming in the hot springs, and visiting the other islands you can see from Santorini
  • Going to the beach. There are a lot of different beaches on the island. We briefly went to a black sand one as part of a tour that was ok but touristy (also the sand was HOT), and had heard the red beach was hard to get to and a little too small. Our hotel hosts recommended Vlychada Beach as a quieter alternative. The water was so clear and the landscape was almost lunar and really unique.
  • Emborio – Not mentioned very often but this was our favorite hidden gem. Not much going on commercially, but it’s a really old town with winding streets that we walked around and explored for fun.

Hope this helps, have fun!!

ceebees :  Nice!! Yeah we are flying Altalia to Athens and then some local airline to Santorini. Staying at 1864 Sea Captain’s Hotel in Oia (holy crap everything is so expensive and already booked for August :0!!!)

mrsluckyducky :  thanks for all the great tips! Oh man now I wish we were staying longer than 3.5 days 🤭.

ceebees :  try smaller places like 1864 Sea Captains House – I got mine for about $700/night (other rooms were cheaper though) but it lacks an infinity pool.

sunshinedaisies :  we are doing your opposite itinerary! Excited for a slower pace of life in Naxos. Have you seen the Anthony Bordain Parts Unknown episode on Naxos? I’m trying to find all the places he went 🙂

Andronis Boutique Hotel or Chroma Suites would be my choices for places to stay. The views are incredible! September is a great time of year because there are fewer cruise ships and it can be less crowded. I wouldn’t miss doing a sunset cruise. They pick you up at your hotel, take you all around the island on a huge catamaran, feed you, and bring you back in the evening.

You have to eat at Pito Gyro for lunch! It is the best gyro in Oia and it is dirt cheap! Its nice to grab some gyros and find a nice place to sit with a view of the caldera. I can’t tell you how many times we ate there… Melitini or Floga 1800 are great for dinner. Melitini is authentic Greek tapas and not pricey at all, and Floga is fancier with great views of the caldera. So jealous, I wish we could go back this year!

I will third the suggestion to stay in Imerovigli rather than Oia – we are gonig for our honeymoon in June. At first, we spent WEEKS looking at hotels in Oia because our friends went for their honeymoon and raved about Oia.

Well, we procrastinated too long and the hotel we had been looking at booked up for the suite we wanted with the private plunge pool.

So I started a fresh search and actually found some AMAZING places in Imerovigli that had better amenities (private infiniti pools rather than private plunge pools and private hot tubs) for a much better rate, all with caldera views.

We finally decided on Dreams: https://dreamsluxurysuites.reserve-online.net/

We were also considering Astra – we fell in LOVE with the Astra Pool Suite – however, it was not available most of the nights we will be in Santorini. :/ https://astra.reserve-online.net/

The important thing to remember about most of these places is that you can book different rooms/suites for different nights to fit your stay in if you need to. At Dreams, we are staying in 3 different suites over the 5 days! Usually, the staff help you move your belongings between suites and it’s not a hassel at all.

I will also say that our friends who went say that the sunset cuise they took was their hands down favorite part of the their honeymoon, and they have told us over and over again to do the hike between Oia and Imerovigli, so we are definitely planning to do both.

Basically, if the $1,000+ prices in Oia are  making you squeamish, you can find the same level of rooms for $200-300 cheaper per night in Imerovigli. And the drive to Oia is only like 15 minutes!

Commenting to follow. We’re doing the exact same itinerary the end of Sept. We initially looked into Oia as well, but ultimately booked a hotel in Imerovigli because we’d rather not deal with the crowds.
