Tell me about Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Maarten and Barbados!
Specifically… I’d love to know the “can’t miss”es of all of these places. We are going on a cruise so will have limited time in all locations. The only exception to this is Puerto Rico. Our cruise departs from San Juan and we will be spending 3 days there when we return…. so hotel/resort suggestions near San Juan are appreciated as well!
Bring on the tips and suggestions!

In St. Lucia, you can hire a taxi quite reasonably to take you around for a day. The island is small and we did a lot in a day with a taxi driver. Pitons, mud bath, volcano, waterfalls, etc. I would recommend this option over a tour group, more room for customization and you can tailor to your time needs. We went with another couple and I think paid something like 70 USD per person for the full day but I don’t really remember if it was 70 per person or 70 per couple which sounds more realistic.

Eat mofongo in Puerto Rico! And visit the forts. Have fun!

In St. Thomas Magen’s Bay is amazing, I consider it a must. Also they have a sky ride up a mountain with a bar at the top. I can’t think of what it is called right now but the views are incredible, and the drinks are good too!

Out of all of these, I’ve only ever been to St. Thomas, but I would say if a snorkeling trip to St. John is available, do that. St. John is so beautiful and has great snorkeling.

I went on a cruise recently (RC) that hit almost all of those islands, here’s what we did at each-
St. Thomas- excursion. got on a boat to near-by tiny Water Island and did a mountain bike tour. was awesome.
St. Maarten- we wanted to see the “French side” of the island, so we just took a taxi over there and had lunch, climbed up to a fort, did some shopping, etc.
St. Kitts- excursion. Scenic Railway tour. double-decker open air train ride around the island. They had locals singing and mixing many many tasty drinks. It was beautiful scenery. One of the more “relaxing” excursions
St. Lucia- excursion. Zip line!! Almost everyone in our family took part in this- aged 20 to 63! And a few were quite nervous about it, but enjoyed every second of it! There were a ton of lines and the rain forest was so beautiful. The bus ride out there was quite long, but worth it. Just beware if the tour guide offers homemade spiced rum, that stuff is serious!
The only day we had a “beach day” was at Grenada (after we hired a taxi to take us on a tour for the day). We didn’t go to Barbados.

@asianyoushi: Yes! Thank you!
@hotchildinthecity: I second the trip to St. Johns! I absolutely loved it there. If you go from Red Hook it is a 20 minute ferry ride or so. Trunks Bay has a reef that is great to snorkle around, but don’t eat food there! I have never been so scared of birds in my life. My favorite beach was Cinnamon Bay.

I agree with @jd94: about the french side of St. Marteen. We vacationed on the French side and it is amazing. The Dutch side (where you will dock) is all casinos and kinda ew. Taxi over to the marina on the French side and have some amazing food!

Thank you so much for the suggestions! Great info!

St. Maarten – Go to Maho Beach!! So awesome. The airplanes land right over you.

In Puerto Rico, I think the best bet is to do the forts and wander around Old San Juan since that is where the boat will be docking- there are great restaurants and bars right there that you could hit for dinner. There are also free hop-on, hop off buses that are great to transport you around the old part.

I’ve been to both St. Thomas and Maarten on a cruise with one of my bridesmaids! Loved them both, with St.Maarten being my fave! Orient Beach is stunning but does have a nude side. Wunloved it there though and even went topless! Ha! When in Rome…. Also, IF you’re their when a plane will land (we missed it) do Macho Beach. The shopping in downtown Phillipsburg is great-lots of great designer knock-offs and free rum in most shops that they’resampling getting you to sample! On French side, stop in bakery-I had an eclair and it was great!! We did an all day tour with Bernanrds Tours and were very pleased! It was like 35 for day and he took us all over island to places listed above! He was fantastic and I booked him through his website.
In St. Thomas, Magen Bay is great! You get better knock off’s in St Maarten so don’t waste your time shopping with the vendors in St. Thomas! We also did an island tour there but I can’t remember the name of the company. Good thing about St. Thomas is that it’s American territory so your cell phone works for free and they accept all US money! It’s beautiful there but I just fell in love with St. Maarten!
I cruise a lot and my advice is tO NOT book excursions through cruise ship. They jack up rates and you get much better deals and, in my opinion, service, by booking through local companies! Just use cruise critic’s website or Trip Advisor to help you find good companies to use!
We are stopping in PR for 24 hrs in route to our honeymoon in Antigua. I haven’t been there but we heard the Shearton in downtown Old San Juan was great and we are also looking at staying at The Gallery Inn after seeing it recommended on the Today Show. It’s like $135 a night for the regular room, but it’s a very unique hotel owned by an artist! We plan on touring the Bacardi Rum plant-it’s a 2 hour tour and simply driving around the island! We are renting a car for our time there! Hope this helps you 🙂

Do you guys think we should stay in Old San Juan (Puerto Rico) or shoot for a more all inclusive resort near by? Also, we are thinking that we will need to rent a car. Let me know if anyone has any thoughts on this!

@csperry2: I went on a family vacation when I was in grade school there so it could be different now. Based on that experience I would not stay in Old San Juan. It was pretty scummy when I was there.
