I had a backyard wedding and I absolutely LOVED it because it was so…us. It was in my backyard which has incredible sentimental significance to us. Having a backyard wedding can be incredibly personal and beautiful but I would not have a backyard wedding if you’re doing it to save money. We actually spent more money on our backyard wedding than if we had hosted it at a venuE but we also understood that it would be more expensive from the start, our wedding planner was very upfront about that. We were very concerned about our guests’ comfort and didn’t want to sacrifice their comfort  because it was a backyard wedding so we probably went a bit overboard. Although hilarious, Please rethink using the side of the house as a bathroom, is that really the tone of the wedding you want? The week before the wedding during my full pre-wedding crisis mode, I was cursing myself that I had to get myself AND my house ready for the wedding but it all worked out great. It definitely will put a level of stress on your in-laws to have their house perfect so keep that in mind if they are high stress. I think one of the biggest mistakes of a backyard wedding is overestimating the DIY projects because it’s your house. I gave myself a cut off date for all projects two weeks before the wedding, if it wasn’t done by then it wasn’t going to happen. Otherwise, I think that you and your in laws will end up having to pull an all nighter the day before the wedding and that’s not fun for anyone. Let me know if you have specific questions, best wishes!

@aggie2010:  The caterer was the biggest expense by far. It was very challenging to find a caterer who could provide the type of menu we wanted at a residential home. Because it was my home and all of the extra logistics with bringing everything in, I felt very strongly about having a really Experienced Wedding Coordinator and that was a big expense but so worth it! The tent rental, floor and decorations were probably the next most expensive.  The tables, chairs, crystal, dishes, etc did not seem that expensive once you can get past the tent (I almost fell over when we received those quotes) and decorations but we also used a lot of china, crystal and flatware from my personal collection, I really wanted our own touch on everything and I have a family collection of silver bowls, candelabras, etc that we used for centerpieces and serving. We just supplemented with some rental stuff. We invited the neighbors so there wouldn’t be any complaints and actually that was the smartest thing we did. They were really helpful about delivery trucks accessing my backyard through theirs, etc.  I hope that helps!
