I recently financed a vehicle purchase for the first time in my life and I feel like I was cautious and did alright. I don’t have the best credit score, but I made a large down payment my APR is lower than I expected which is great. I’m curious to know what others out there pay for their car payments.
What is your loan length?
What is your APR?
What is your total monthly payment?
What year, make, and model did you buy?
Of course, you don’t have to answer if you don’t want. Just curious! I’ll go first.
– 36 months
– $250 / month
– 2012 Ford Focus

@peasantsong: I’m leasing right now, but I intend to purchase my current car once my lease is up
-39 month lease
-Payment is $288/month
-2012 Nissan Rogue S Special Edition (hooray for all wheel drive!)
Honestly I’m not sure what my APR is. Leases are a little different as far as interest rate goes. I work for the dealership that I’m leasing the car from so of course I got the best possible deal.
Congratulations on your purchase! Financing a car is one of the best ways to help improve your credit! I test drove the new Focus a few month back and they drive REALLY well!

Part of the reason ours is so high is b/c we ended up having to trade in a piece of shit 2004 VW Passat. I still owed about $8-$10K on that car but it ended up un-driveable within 2 years of purchase. The turbo booster would heat up & glow, one of the places we took it too put the wrong oil in & we had alot of sludge, the tire sensors were damaged when the place we took it too to change the tires took a jackhammer to my locking lugnuts (the car didn’t come with the key for them) the day before we were scheduled to move (my Fiance nearly had the cops called on him for blessing the owner out once we realized what they did), & the spark plugs would go out every 100 miles or so (eventually had to keep a spare box in the trunk 24/7). The turbo & spark plugs were all recalled but we decided to take the hit & just trade it in b/c we are 5 hours away from any dealer that will do the recalls & had no way to even get it there (due to the recall issues). Turns out my German made 2004 Passat was actually made in Ugoslavia from 02-05, until VW realized all the issues as a result. So we probably lost around $5-7K on that but it was worth it in the end….

@BeckyS0: Damn dude, that sucks! It’s horror stories like these that made me extremely nervous about buying a car. I have only purchased one car before this in my entire life, a ’98 Geo Metro, and I ran that thing into the ground with no problems except for it’s age. It’s actually still running now and I gave it to my brother.
The most important thing going into my financing negotiations was knowing that I did not want payments any higher than 250/month and no longer than 36 months. I did everything I could to get what I wanted in that regard.

60 months, 2.49%, $415/month for a 2009 Murano SL. I made no down payment and my trade didn’t bring anything after we paid off the loan. I could have bought a cheaper car and would have a smaller payment, but…I love my car!
(edited for bad math!! five year loan, not six!)

@hma812: My husband wants a Mini soooo bad. Lol! It was on our shortlist of cars, but the Focus won out due to greater affordability and it’s size. Our next car will be a Mini or a Fiat if honey has his way.

@peasantsong: I love love love my mini. I either wanted an itty bitty car or a giant suv. The mini is so much more fun to drive!!
