Thanks for all the replies! I was planning to just get one bag, but everytime I show my husband one he says it looks like a purse! I already have a Kate Spade nylon tote that I was thinking I could just use as a diaper bag, and then maybe use an old backpack or something in his trunk for emergencies? I figure at least while the baby is little I’ll probably be with him, anyway.

I have a 2.5 yr old and a 6 month old. I’ve had the same diaper bag the whole time, and it’s a Kate Spade black and white fabric one with a changing pad and some internal pockets. When we go out (to dinner, a birthday party, the zoo, etc), we take it and it usually goes under the stroller or gets set down somewhere, so neither of us are really carrying it. There have probably been only a handful of times in the last 2.5 years where Darling Husband has had to carry it, but he’s fine when he does, even though it kind of looks like a purse. Any time he does, he obviously has a kid or 2 with him as well, so I don’t think anyone wonders why “that guy is carrying a purse!”
Just choose something that’s big enough to throw a bunch of stuff in, and enough pockets to organize the stuff!

BlueEyes222: that’s a great point about how the bag will probably be under the stroller, so Darling Husband probably won’t be actually carrying it. I’ll have to tell him that next time he complains that the bags I’m looking at are girly.

Cory_loves_this_girl: we have this in black…. Have you had this through your first as well? Ours is coming on three years old and is falling apart… Of course it’s been our main bag for 3 years, so its been through a lot. Just wondering how yours held up 🙂
So the Fisher price is our main bag we use for both kids. Then Fiance and I have our own- he has a camo skip hop and I have a pinkshoulder bag. When we go on vacation or to the beach or amusement park etc.. I use my northface back pack.
The skip hop has been the bag that has taken a beating and holds up well. If we were having more kids, I would make an investmemt in another one (still might if the price is ever right), but for now I plan on making due with what I have.
I think the most imortant thing for me is space.., especially when they are itty bitty. You tend to not just need space for their stuff- but yours as well. I’ve been shit on and spit on while out…an extra shirt or pair of leggings never hurt!

SouthernBee00: I registered for a Carter’s one (very feminine) at BRU. But I was surprised with a Kate Spade by a friend of my mom’s. I love it. It’s super girly. But it’s big, its tough, its well laid out for my needs, the inside is completely wipeable and waterproofed (because I have spilled several bottles in it. It’s an issue with the bottles we were using previously, not the bag.) And its very pretty.
Darling Husband has his own. He has a backpack style baby tech bag. I have no idea who makes it (one of the big baby brands) it was from BRU. TBH, he rarely uses it up to this point (8 months). But in future I can see him using it more and more as he takes the kid out on his own for longer periods of time.
At this point, we could have easily gotten away without DH’s bag, it was not a neccessity.

sostobe: that is super helpful, thanks. Maybe I’ll just get something I like for now and Darling Husband can pick his own later when he needs one.

we share one, but Darling Husband rarely carries it around. It is usually on/in the stroller if I am there or not.

We share. I’ve got the JuJuBe BFF in one of the black and white prints. It’s great, because you can use it as a backpack too.

It’s a freakin wreck. Actually it was a really expensive one my mom got me on sale at Macy’s. It’s been fine. Just a regular one. Maybe I’ll get a super organizey one for the next kid lol

smoocheepoo: Yeah it’s the same one we’ve used since DD#1 was born (2.5 years). It’s still holding up really well and looks pretty new. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that we don’t use it that much, and it spends a lot of time in the car haha. A pretty good investment over the 2.5 years though!

In total we have 4 bags. We have a large diaper bag that we take if we are going to be out of the house for a good chunk of time, then we have a smaller version of that one, we have another smaller bag that goes to daycare with baby every day, and then we have a backpack that the hubby uses when it’s just him and baby.
The larger main diaper bag looks like a luggage tote or a small carry-on, but it does have more of a feminine look to it, so I usually carry it (although hubby will carry it on occasion just from the door to the car for example), and if not being carried it hangs on the stroller. I bought it at Ross in the purse section, so it isn’t really even meant to be a proper diaper bag.
The smaller diaper bag is actually a cooler bag with a crossbody strap. The daycare bag is also a cooler bag, just with shorter straps. And we got the backpack so that hubby would have an easier time toting it around and he feels much more comfortable carrying that if he’s alone.
