Right now my nails are a disaster.

For years I had a great nail salon and I was super happy with my gels, but since Darling Husband and I got married and I moved to another side of town, I can’t seem to find a decent salon. I’ve gone to the neighborhood budget salons and swanky salons and keep running into attitudes and shoddy work. I’ve had nails that would break between visits, and nail fungus.

Finally several weeks ago after a visit to a high end salon where the nail tech argued with me about my nail color choice (OPI ballet slippers or something like that), I decided I’d had it, and I had my gels removed.

Right now my nails look like they were caught in lawnmower. They are all shredded and there are grooves where they were drilled too roughly. I have started taking Biotin vitamin supplements to help make them strong and healthy again. I also ordered a DIY Gelish kit on sale through Amazon for about $28, and a $40 LED lamp, and as soon as the nail fungus is all grown out (yuck!!!) I’m going to try doing my own nails.

If the Gelish products don’t work for me, I’ll probably try one of the OPI kits. If THAT doesn’t work, I’m just going to go au naturelle. I refuse to pay someone to screw up my nails and/or give me an attitude in the process. Either that, or I’ll consider making the long drive back to my old salon. They were fabulous.

Here is the Gelish kit I ordered, FYI. It has 247 mostly positive reviews, so I’m optimistic and I hope this will work for me.

I don’t paint my nails. They’re long. I trim them and shape them every few weeks. I’ll use clear nail polish or a french manicure kit for special occasions.

I used to get gel manicures every two weeks but I am so picky about how they turn out that I do them myself now. I got tired of paying $40 for a gel manicure and it turning out messy or hastily done. So I bought my own gel kit (red carpet manicure) and do that every few weeks. I really like it! I am taking a break now and just using regular polish. I gave myself a manicure and pedicure last night. I am much happier now and saving money which I like!

I have a friend who does them, so I go religiously every 2 weeks for the fill ins on my acrilics. I love the funky colors and designs. Call it juvenile or whatever but I think theyre fun!

I paint my nails myself, but like to keep them long. Unfortunately several have broken recently ๐Ÿ™

I like to use fun colors, and sometimes I’ll do designs, especially around the holidays. I have a rather large nail polish collection.

I love doing my own nails and buying different nail polish colors. I usually change my color once a week and often touch it up mid-week. Here’s what I’m wearing today:

I rarely have my nails done cause I type a lot all day and wear the tips fast or do a lot of house work and painting that gets all over my hands.  But when I do them, I just do polish myself on my real nails.  ..

Someone should do a manicure spin off thread!

I do my own acrylic nails (fingers and toes), and it saves me $120+ a month on average.

I took alot of practice, but online instructions have been very helpful for me. DEFINITELY worth the effort ๐Ÿ™‚

I just did these last night, I’m calling them “granite” nails ๐Ÿ™‚

And these were the last set:

I used to bite my nails constantly. I stopped biting a year ago. And part of removing the temptation is having pretty nails I don’t want to destroy. I paint them myself and switch colors ever 3-4 days. I may or may not have a nail polish addiction. I also have like 5 nail strengtheners because my nails are so weak from being ripped apart that they are really thin and flaky. I just got my first profession manicure (just regular polish) for my birthday and since it chipped just as fast as when I do it, I think I’ll stick to painting my own.

I grow my own and shape them. The beds are very pink and the tips are very very white naturally. They also grow really really fast so even if I did get fakes I’d have to have them filled ever few days, seriously. I hate nail polish because as I said my nails grow freakishly fast so the paint is weird by the end of the day.

Sometimes I feel like wolverine from x-men haha.

I never paint my fingernails.  Whenever I do, they get yellow and brittle and peel like crazy. I haven’t put polish on them in at least 5 years – I file and buff them only – and I get constant compliments on how healthy and beautiful they are. I do, however, get pedicures with color on my toes.

I really don’t do much with my fingernails, but I do paint my toenails. If I need my nails done for something, I’ll usually have someone else do them for me!

I’ve been doing shellac every 2-3 weeks.  I get french manicures, so it’s harder to tell if/when they chip from the bottom.  It gets to be so expensive, though!  I’m tempted to only shellac my left hand, since that’s the one that will be photographed…

I’m a reformed nail biter and gel addict!  I used to bite my nails and tried to stop by getting gels.  I loved that in university.  Then when I was saving money to live in France for a year, I had to cut that out of my budget.  I got the gels removed and my nails were completely destroyed.  They were drilled and filed so thin that they were very painful, so never again!  Besides that, I think they look really tacky on me.

After using a cocktail of nail strengtheners, I’ve finally managed to grow my nails out in the past few years and have been a total nail polish junkie since.  I loveloveLOVE my nail polish and almost always wear it because it prevents my nails from peeling/chipping, which they tend to do, especially when they’re getting too long. >.<  Opaque polishes also help me pick at my nails less – dirty nails are a huge pet peeve of mine, so if I’m bare-nailed or using a clear polish, I’m always picking at them as soon as I see even the smallest speck under them.

I get my nails done fairly regularly, but I’m OCD about my nails so I almost always refile them into a shape I like afterwards.  Consequently, I’ve been getting more pedicures and trying to cut out manicures – I try to just do them myself now. ๐Ÿ˜›
