kes18 :  Sorry, I neede some advice again. I got a HUGE drop this morning. Does this mean I should be expecting AF soon? I have been temping vaginally the last couple days.

greywacke :  Hmmm…you have open circles on 4 and 5dpo, which means you were taking your temp at a different time than usual and your temps may not be realiable. Did you temp early/later than normal those days?

A 5-day LP would be extremely unlikely so I doubt AF is on the way. Unless you actually ovulated earlier than FF is saying.

ETA: As kes mentions below, switching from oral to vaginal temping midway through your cycle will definitely yield unreliable results. Next cycle, I’d pick one method and stick to it the whole way through lol and start temping earlier to be sure you don’t ovulate earlier in your cycle and miss it!

greywacke :  did you take the last 2 temps at different times or do something different the last 2 days?  I wouldn’t be too concerned by one temperature just yet, it could be a fluke.  Did you temp orally before? If so, you should wait until a new cycle to start temping vaginally.  Switching them up in the middle of a cycle would causes issues and unreliable data I think.  Though usually vaginal temps run hotter.

A drop like that does usually signal AF later in the cycle but since it’s only 5 DPO I wouldn’t think that is what it is.  Unless you did O before CD 17, since we don’t have that data it could be a possibility.  If you normally have 32 day cycles it’s possible you O’d on CD 16 and you just missed the rise.  So if you had temped all month, you may have had lower temps CD 1-CD16 and you have just missed it here.  If you did O on CD 16, then yes that drop probably is signaling AF.

tiffanybruiser :  Ah, so that’s what the circles mean! No, the temps were taken at the same time at 5.30 – 6 pm every morning. I am new to this app and just put in my data from the previous app last night. For some reason the app defaults to 9.30 pm.. I switched the timings in some of them, but then got lazy, sleepy and didn’t fix the rest.

kes18 :  Thanks, yes I did do it orally before. Only my last couple measurements have been vaginally. The first vaginal measurement followed the trend the oral readings were taken so I assumed it would be ok to continue. I think you are right and I should stick to one method only.

It could be possible that I O’d before CD 17. In fact, I was having some weird cramping CD11. The only think seriously throwing me off is that, I also had some pink discharge on CD 24 right before the predicted O day. I think I should POS just in case.

I can’t wait for this cycle to end!

greywacke :  good luck!  You can do either vaginal or oral temping, just do one for the entire cycle and then if you want to switch you could start the other way that next cycle.

kes18 :  I might stick with vaginal because the oral readings are very inconsistent. I can get as much as a 0.5 degree shift between multiple readings. It’s very annoying because I have to guess what is the best average then and pick that reading. But with vaginal readings it stays between 0.02 degrees at least with multiple readings… At least that’s what I’ve observed in the last couple days.

greywacke :  I think vaginal temps are usually more consistent.  Plus they are less susceptible to things like getting out of bed to use the bathroom or mouth breathing if you have a cold or something.

greywacke :  vaginal temps are usually higher than oral. So your chart looks like you ovulated a few days ago because your temps have been higher lately, but those higher temps are likely just due to the fact that you switched from oral to vaginal. So I am betting you ovulated before you started temping! Sometime before CD17. So, AF might actually be on the way, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have a short LP.

Since we’re talking about weird charts I thought I’d post mine. Don’t mind the part at the beginning with the dotted line, we went on holiday and I forgot my thermometer. My chart makes no sense, and I take it at the same time everyday right as I wake up! (I also have 55 day cycles which is why it’s so long)

kes18 :  not to threadjack too much, but is this actually correct?   Plus they are less susceptible to things like getting out of bed to use the bathroom

My impression is that it’s the increase in activity and blood circulation from getting out of bed and moving around, or from sleeping restlessly etc, that causes your temperature to increase, so it will show up on either kind of temperature.  Definitely oral temps are more susceptible to fluctuation from being sick / mouth breathing though.

KittyYogi :  I dunno if that’s true and am too lazy to google, but my hunch is that getting up to use the bathroom would throw vaginal temping off too. Never use the bathroom before temping ladies! I did that a few times in the beginning and my chart was a disaster. Even just getting up for 20 seconds and then lying back down will throw your temps off.

sassybeee :  My guess would be you ovulated on CD24. which would put you at 13dpo now. So AF is probably imminent, unless you’re pregnant! Or unless i’m totally wrong about your chart lol.
