Also went to a tent wedding not to long ago and it was simply great! Do whatever you want, I am pretty sure everyone will have a blast:)

I’d be more worrid about the daily rain in the mid Atlantic summers than the heat (if you were willing to do a morning or evening wedding, that is)

It’s so unpredictable that time of year in the mid Atlantic (I live in coastal NC… it has poured rain every day the past two weeks)

ETA: I realized you said you were in NY. I was married at the end of August on Long Island (12 years ago), and the ceremony was outside. It actually rained the entire week before and we got SO LUCKY that it was a beautiful day on our wedding day. The reception was indoors, but after the food was served, everyone ended up going outside, and even headed knee-deep into the water. It was really lovely.

I’ve also attended an August wedding upstate NY, and the whole thing was outdoors, and it was perfect. It was hot but not overwhelmingly hot. They had some fans hanging in the tent, and gave everyone cute little paper fans.

I’d check the average temperatures and weather, and keep an eye on things THIS August to see if it’s unbearable.

How hot is it there and what are the bugs like?

I had an outdoor wedding in August in Canada, and it was a great time, despite some hiccups! It was ROASTING during the day (freak heat wave, 35*C), but where I was it cools right down around 6PM. So it was only super hot for the first 1.5hrs of the wedding. We provided hand fans, cool towels, and lots of shade.

There were also a few mosquitoes, but we put out bug spray on all the tables and had citronella candles etc. they also don’t stick around that long there.

But – my wedding was quite casual, a lot of people were camping in an adjacent field and had comfortable attire etc. We also told them what to pack and what to expect on our wedding website. It might be difficult to have a more formal affair outdoors
