I’m not 100% what it is appropriate or whatever.  Personally, I think thank you cards are supposed to be more personal so I’d throw out the proper-ness and address them the way you see fit to.

Usually, I do the formal “Mr. & Mrs. John Smith” on the invitation, then call them by whatever I call them everyday on the card itself. I don’t worry about state abbreviation versus full state name & things like that, though.
