I think you should.
In our case, we barely ever send a card on time. Just lazy I guess, butttt we do send something- eventually. I think you should still send a card to say thanks for being there you don’t know the gift could still be in the works…

You (hopefully) thanked them in person for coming out. To do so in writing is redundant, and can appear as a snip on their lack of gifting.
However, a gift requires a written thank you.

Then you have already thanked them for their attendance. I wouldn’t follow with a formal note.

+1. This is the proper etiquette. The thank you cards are for the gift, since you were the host. Plus you already thanked them in person
