So to recap on all of things I’ve dealt with living in this house for the last 4 years:
- 5 50′ pine trees falling on or right next to the house
- The roof leaks in about 10 spots
- The leaky roof is causing mold to grow in our bedroom
- We have been sleeping in the living room for the last month
- The basement floods every time it rains so I do laundry with wet feet
- Sometimes the washer and dryer decide to stop working (probably because they are in the basement)
- Among about a million other little things that need to be repaired
This bring me to today. We have no hot water. Didn’t last night but I wasn’t sure if that was a serious issue or something that would fix itself. Well… I basically washed myself off by splashing water on me but didn’t wash my hair. Today, you guessed it: No shower. Are you kidding me?! I can no longer even discuss the issue with my SO because he thinks I’m making him pick between me and his family but what I really want is for his family to not allow us to live in such a shit hole. His parents own where we live and it has been such a mess with them since his mom told my Future Sister-In-Law that we don’t pay any rent and haven’t basically the whole time we’ve lived here. That is 100% untrue. I haven’t spoken to them since and he only speaks to them when he has to but is quickly moving on. I don’t forgive that easily. Then they decided not to fix the leaky roof while so many of our things were destroyed and everything we own smells funny now.
I cannot wait to move and I cannot wait to never speak to these people again. Bitter Party of 1.

This sounds unsanitary and unsafe. I hope you can move out of there soon, it sounds terrible.

@MrsSl82be: We should be able to move in 45 to 60 days but we cann’t move into our home because it needs a complete remodel so sooner is not an option.
@mspony:It is unsanitary and unsafe. They just don’t seem to care that much about our health or well being. They have stopped coming over to visit because I’m pretty sure they are so ashamed that they refused to fix our home and now we cannot sleep in our own bedroom.
They made such a big deal about not fixing the roof because they couldn’t afford it but now that they have started to feel bad about it they are thinking about fixing it. Plus, they think they are going to rent it out to someone else. They even came over the other day (while we weren’t home) to look at the house and assess how much work would be necessary. They even moved our things, put some things away and took our garbage out. I felt so violated.

People can only do to you what you allow them to do. It’s great weather right now. Can you put your things in storage and find a camping spot for the next 2 months? Find an RV to rent?Housesit?

There’s an easy way to fix this, but it may cause a bigger rift. Call your insurance agency, tell them what happened, they very well may pay to have everything fixed and then they will go and subrogate after the landlord, basically send them a bill and say hey we fixed this for you, now you get to pay us. Or, call the health department. They’ll come out and do an inspection, probably tell you to move into a hotel or somewhere else until everything is fixed and again, provide a bill to his parents. I’d try to go for option 1 out of anything because they may not repay you for the hotel expenses.
