MarriedToMyWork : I agree. But of course we know it isn’t just slutty teenagers getting abortions- it is also married women, many of whom already have children….I’m not sure what they are supposed to have done, maybe just never have sex again unless they want a baby? Or obtain a crystal ball to determine whether their yet to be conceived child has incompatible with life defects? It’s all very confusing for my pretty little head so I’m so glad we have privileged white Christian men and their restrictive laws to help us absolutely know what is best for our bodies, our pregnancies, and our families.

I have to say it’s never been more clear to me as it has been this past year how many people truly believe that their religious views should dictate how others live their lives. Disregard that our country was founded upon this idea of freedom, whether that be religious freedom, freedom to express oneself, etc. That is my problem with the Republican platform and pretty much all the (extreme) candidates the GOP put forth this election cycle. It has never been clearer that this party only believes in freedom if you meet certain criteria.

I’ve too suffered a miscarriage for a very wanted baby. You bet your ass I still believe, regardless of what I lost, that every woman has the right to make choices for her own body and life. This isn’t about a woman getting to have more of a say because she’s experienced a loss. It’s about the fact that every woman deserves to control her body. Period. End of fucking story.

crackerjax : Holy shit. Stop pretending like late term abortions are being routinely performed on healthy viable fetuses. I don’t want to sound crass but you can’t put up a dead baby for adoption. Not to mention all the children already wasting away in the system because nobody wants to adopt them. People who feel as strongly about “life” as you do, should be doing everything they can to help those already living in hell, how many children have you fostered or adopted? Have you donated money? I guess your God doesn’t care about them?

The United States is a secular nation with regards to government and laws. The Constitution guarantees you the freedom to practice your religion, but it does not give you the right to impose your religious beliefs upon others. Or utilize your religious beliefs as a mandate to dictate the behavior of others who don’t share those beliefs.

It boggles my mind- the people who use their religion as a weapon in discussions of abortion, gay rights, etc are often the exact same people sounding false alarms about American Muslims trying to impose Sharia law….I say this as someone who was raised Catholic and would still identify as Christian. And let’s not even get into how people can be extremely selective and self serving with their “religious beliefs” ie Kim Davis…God was apparently cool with her 3 divorces and history of adultery, but performing her job was a bridge too far.

peegee : Please don’t forget donating to Planned Parenthood to help people have access to reliable methods of birth control and sexual education- since these things are PROVEN to reduce the number of abortions.

Having had a miscarriage of my first and a very much wanted pregnancy is what cemented even more my belief in choice.

Pro-choice is–surprise!!–about CHOICE. I was in a dark place after my miscarriage last year. It felt like the light of my life had literally gone out, because the tiny little blinking light that was my baby’a heartbeat, that I could see myself immediately at previous ultrasounds though I am no ultrasound technician, that light had gone out on that day. I didn’t need the technician to tell me “I’m sorry, it looks like everything has stopped .” to know, because the light wasn’t there.

My turning point came when I saw this comment on Facebook, that a large part of our (our as in women who lost a wanted pregnancy) suffering comes from the fact that we feel powerless, because our choice (to have this baby) was stripped away. Once I understood this about what I was feeling, my spiral started going up instead of down .

We wanted so much to have this baby. But some unseen force–god? Biology? Fate?–laughed at our choice and said nope! That’s what I was struggling against—I kept crying into the void: “This is NOT what I wanted!” Why didn’t *I* get to make this choice? Why was this outcome FORCED on me?

And that is why I do not want CHOICE to be stripped away from any woman! I made my choice and it was stripped away and that felt horrible. Someone else making a different choice on the same issue, it’d be no less horrible to have their choice stripped away.

Doesn’t matter WHAT stripped our choice away: For example, NONE OF THE FOLLOWING–telling me that it was biology (“most likely chromosomal abnormalities”) or God (“he called his angel back to heaven”) or something unknown (“sometimes these things just happen”)–MADE ME FEEL ANY BETTER.

This area is, permit me to say, so sacred to women. No one should be making it harder.

amanda1988 : I saw something on fb that was so accurate it was along the lines of this, “The women who are getting late term abortions are not 17-year-olds who are afraid to tell their parents. They are women with cribs and decorated nurseries.”

fourfrenchfries : YES!!! This exactly! If you want fewer abortions then why are you pushing abstinence-only sex ed? Instead of medically accurate information as well as access to health screenings, condoms and other forms of birth control as well as how to use those effectively. As well as supporting single moms and low-income families to make ends meet and providing childcare so that they can rationalize having another child if they feel they can’t afford one.

milena : I would even argue if this higher being is all knowing than the reason for miscarriages is to discard non-viable babies so that healthy ones can be born when something goes awry. That whatever higher being gave us doctors and the science to save these women and to end suffering humanly when an issue arises late in a pregnancy. I’m an agnostic but you’d think if God can’t make every pregnancy perfect and healthy then the least he could do is provide options to save your life, and ease the suffering of a child. Just my .02

It makes me think of this “joke” when people argue that the woman should just risk her life or die with her baby etc…

A terrible storm came into a town and local officials sent out an emergency warning that the riverbanks would soon overflow and flood the nearby homes. They ordered everyone in the town to evacuate immediately.

A faithful Christian man heard the warning and decided to stay, saying to himself, “I will trust God and if I am in danger, then God will send a divine miracle to save me.”

The neighbors came by his house and said to him, “We’re leaving and there is room for you in our car, please come with us!” But the man declined. “I have faith that God will save me.”

As the man stood on his porch watching the water rise up the steps, a man in a canoe paddled by and called to him, “Hurry and come into my canoe, the waters are rising quickly!” But the man again said, “No thanks, God will save me.”

The floodwaters rose higher pouring water into his living room and the man had to retreat to the second floor. A police motorboat came by and saw him at the window. “We will come up and rescue you!” they shouted. But the man refused, waving them off saying, “Use your time to save someone else! I have faith that God will save me!”

The flood waters rose higher and higher and the man had to climb up to his rooftop.

A helicopter spotted him and dropped a rope ladder. A rescue officer came down the ladder and pleaded with the man, “Grab my hand and I will pull you up!” But the man STILL refused, folding his arms tightly to his body. “No thank you! God will save me!”

Shortly after, the house broke up and the floodwaters swept the man away and he drowned.

When in Heaven, the man stood before God and asked, “I put all of my faith in You. Why didn’t You come and save me?”

And God said, “Son, I sent you a warning. I sent you a car. I sent you a canoe. I sent you a motorboat. I sent you a helicopter. What more were you looking for?”

What are doctors and the procedures they offer if not a car, a motor boat and a helicopter?

crackerjax : Sorry but your statement offends me. Please do not say that your god is my god. This is so far from the truth. And may I say a prime example of Christians pushing their agendas on those that do not want it!!

Fun fact: if every church in America sponsored just 1 family to adopt a child, there would be NO CHILDREN LEFT IN ORPHANAGES. I say to the church, put your money where your mouth is. Sponsor families to adopt these children that you so desperately wanted born.

crackerjax : Oh shut it. Your God is NOT everyone’s god. You are showing the ultimate in ingnorance and judgment. How does your God feel about his believers judging on his behalf?

Thanks for repeatedly ignoring me when I ask you to reconcile your statement your God is against abortions, where that is clearly not the case if the pregnancy belongs to an “enemy” or adulterer, or a woman who has been “disobedient”, and ordered the killing of men, women, children, and babies. I guess I will just keep asking.

crackerjax : If your god is real, then why do women miscarry so much? (1/3 women will miscarry during their lifetime). Doesn’t that make him the KING OF ABORTIONS?
