fredthebasil :  You don’t get a free pass for saying ignorant things because you “phrased it nicely.” I just went back and reread my post. Perhaps you are a little affronted that I claimed you asking about women using it as birth control is ignorant. That’s because, to me, it IS an ignorant comment, one that should not be met with hand-holding and coddling. If anything, I came across as frustrated and disappointed that women still have to defend their choices to people they don’t even know or who believe in their heart that they are using it as a form of birth control. Nothing I said would be considered “vitriol”, but hey, you are free to your opinions.

Also, “anti-choice” which I did not use once in my post, does not AT ALL equal “anti-life.”

fredthebasil :  Ah, so you can dish out the blunt, slightly sarcastic, tell-’em-what-they-don’t-want-to-hear posts in Etiquette threads (especially cash bar/Honeyfund ones) but when the shoe is on the other foot and people are saying things you don’t want to hear, all of a sudden you’re a defender of gentleness and civility in discourse?  You know, I admire your take-no-prisoners approach when it comes to defending good hosting practices…seeing you of all people go with the weak “you’re being hateful” deflection against people who present a thoughtful challenge to your position is somewhat akin to discovering that one’s idol is merely a flawed human.

As the saying goes, I’m not mad…I’m just disappointed.

PS.  You should have used “nasty” more prominently–then you could have been very on-trend.

fredthebasil :  We are talking about late term abortions though, so yes this topic is discussing medical abnormalities or lives being at risk, because that is why late term abortions are performed.

Please stop perpetuating the myth that it’s common for women to use abortion as a form of birth control.

lol to anyone claiming women are using abortion as birth control and yet they are voting republican.

Republicans have done everything they can to make birth control harder to get, including defunding if PP and attempts to defund it. Even though abortions are very small percentage of what they do and tax dollars don’t pay for them.

Guess what they do.

Yeah, that’s right. They provide birth control to women who can’t afford it and can’t get it. Which means they reduce the abortion rate.

There is no defending or supporting Trump because you don’t agree with abortion. If you really want to see abortion rates go down, as they have under Obama– by the way, you’d support PP.  And thus Democrats.

fredthebasil :  plan b was created for a reason……

i want to say most women like previously stated have abortions by the 10 week mark, which is considered a pill abortion.

yes the percentage of woman who have abortions is probably in the thousands, but i want to say more then half that number occurs before the 10 week mark.

Kslim13 :  I believe about 90% of abortions are performed in the first trimester. But once again, this thread is about late term abortions and all the misinformation and (in my opinion, completely unnecessary) stigma surrounding them.

Kslim13 :  You would be correct. 66% of abortions happen before week 8 and 92% before week 13.* Only 1.2% of abortions are 3rd-trimester abortions. Which are illegal in 41 states and only 4 doctors in the united states will perform them. AND that is under the condition that the baby and/or mother will not survive or will die shortly after birth or other serious complications. These are very expensive medical procedures that can cost around $10,000. However, insurance sometimes covers these because they are so rare, and only done when necessary. Most of this 1.2% happens to people who really did love and want this child and they are devastated.

*Most women would probably have them a lot sooner. However, they are very expensive and many low-income women have to remain pregnant until they can afford an abortion.

Why no one is using abortions as birth control:

Average cost
6-12 Weeks $550-$650
13-14 Weeks $650-$750
15-16 Weeks $800- $900
17-18 Weeks $1,125 – $1,225
19-20 Weeks $1,350- $1,450
21 Weeks $1,925
22 Weeks $2,000 +

Also NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE “Likes” abortion. People don’t get them for funsies. They are invasive, expensive and hard to get in most states.

If you want to prevent abortion then write your reps and beg that they make it mandatory for schools to teach science-based, medically accurate sex education. Donate to places like Planned Parenthood where people can get assistance with preventative contraceptives, as well as health screenings. Get on board with universal health care for all. And lastly support low-income families so that if the only reason they are choosing an abortion is because they are on hard times and make sure that those people have access to childcare, housing, maternity leave, and food stamps. If you want to be pro-life fine, don’t have an abortion yourself and help care for those children who are born to poor families. I find it very frightening that people don’t trust women to make this choice for themselves. Even making it illegal will never stop abortions, all it would do is stop SAFE abortions and force women to put their lives in danger. Very rarely will a pro-life person even have an answer for how to punish women for illegal abortions and almost none say that the penalty should be death or permanent injury.

>Anti-abortionists claim “murder” of a baby (fetus) is wrong

>Murder doctors who perform abortions

I guess it doesn’t count as murder if you force a woman to carry an inviable fetus to term even if it means both she and the fetus will die.

But fuck me and my rights, right?

AwkwardCoconut :  Some is from the CDC’s website others were from planned parenthood’s data. Basically from doing tons of googling and reading reports and stuff to try to refute some of the arguments out there.

A late term abortion means that someone has decided to carry this baby in her womb for 20+ weeks.  That is five months.

Most people who have been pregnant will tell you that it’s tough on your body.  On top of that, that is five months of growing increasingly attached to the little person growing inside of you.

I firmly believe anyone who needs a late term abortion is not doing it frivilously, and that this decision is likely the hardest decision they’ve ever had to made.  I imagine it’s incredibly similar to the decision to take a child off of life support.  It is not my place, nor the place of the government, to make this excruciating time in someone’s life more difficult and more dangerous than it already is.  This is between the pregnant woman, her partner, and their doctor.

I’m sure all of this has been said in this thread, of course.
