Eeeek… I’m not sure that’s the best idea… I’d probably just go for a small, intimate ceremony over a surprise.

At the end of the day the vows and promises you guys will make that day will be for you and him and your commitment to each other! I love the idea! Why not save the money .. besides you will NEVER please everyone!

I totally get your idea of going for something small and skipping all the hoopla. But I would just do a small intimate ceremony that everyone knows about rather than a surprise. Just my opinion though.

I think it’s a good idea.  Let’s just say that for my wedding, there were things my parents and his parents didn’t want us to do.  I was also close to cancelling my wedding.  I finally decided this was our wedding and not anyone elses.  We were also paying for our wedding. I told my family (both sides) that I would ‘consider’ their suggestions but ultimately we would make the decision together.  On the day of my wedding, I knew my mom and his mom was not happy with some of the decisions I made.  Oh well! Yeah, they b*tched about it on the day of, but they got over it.

I think you could pull it off and it would be a great surprise! Best of luck.  Please let us know how it turns out.

I saw this sort of thing on a wedding blog and thought it was awesome.  Obviously, you have to know the personalities involved for it to work.  🙂

I think the couple on the blog had the bride’s parents in on the scheme.

@mightywombat: I agree about the urgency thing.. I rarely go to engagement parties lol.. but I never miss weddings.. so I might not attend this and then realize that I missed the actual wedding itself!

Sounds awesome! Love the idea and it is a great way to get what you guys want and not what everyone else wants!

It’s been done before, so it totally works, but one thing you might consider: if there are “must have” people you want there who might be on the fence about an engagement party, you might make sure they’re in on the secret.

Also, you should get actual friends to be “in on it”, so they can be the people “throwing” the party- you’ll want to keep track of RSVPs somehow, even for an engagement party, and that will ensure that none of your “must haves” bail b/c they don’t realize it’s actually your wedding.

Example: say that your bestest best friend from school who lives 6 hours away is invited to an engagement party, but decides not to come b/c “it’s not their wedding” and she “can’t afford to travel that far twice”…. you’ll want to make sure that you have a heads up that she’s declined so you can call her and make sure she gets her butt to your wedding!
