I had the pleasure of going to try on a few dresses this past weekend while searching for wedding venues in Savannah. I have to admit I had a LOT of reservations about the process being a diva-sized lady! I visited Savannah Bridal Mart, they had a pretty decent variety of plus size sample gowns to try on and the service was wonderful. I just wish I had made more time to shop! Plus size bees please take comfort that you CAN have a great dress shopping experience and there are a lot of options out there if you go to the right place.
I am a street size 22/24 top and 26/28 bottom in most clothes for reference. Here are two from the search (chunky photos ahead!):
This first one was a Maggie I believe, does anyone know the name? This one is clearly not my size but felt like a really nice quality gown. Please excuse the straps!
The second one here is a Mori Lee, 3127 I believe? I really think this dress has a lot of potential and was about 1/2 my budget so hooray for that!
I asked the consultant about custom beaded cap sleeves and she whipped this up to give me an idea of what it could look like. I think that is a great option for my frame but I would have them done a little more off the shoulder to open up my neckline.
I definitely think huge poofy ball gowns are out, as are tight sheath styles, mermaid, etc. Ruching, asymetrical details, and corset backs are my friend. The search continues!
I would love to get your thoughts on what you think would look good on my body type. Are you “diva-sized”? Show me your dress!

I like the first one best. You could add a sparkly broach on the side for extra bling.
I’d be interested to see it once it fits properly, but I really like it.

@sassy411: It’s tough to see in the photos, but there actually is a little brooch detail on that one, on the left side where it gathers near the waist (my arm is all in the way!). Do you think that one is a contender? Maybe I will try it on again next time I’m in town, I don’t feel like either of these is “the one” you know?

I really like the second one. I feel like it’s more flattering on your figure.

I love the cap sleeves!!!

The second one is better it gives you more curves and more of a figure. Beautiful dress what kind of shoes are you planning to wear?

I love the second one on you!

I like the second one a lot!

I prefer the first one on you. I definitely think full A-line! I also think a natural waist would be best, which I don’t think the second one really has.
Also, I PMd you, OP!

@parapluie: I’m sorry I’m so late in replying to this! I believe the top shoes are Adrienne Vittadini’s Ashley Flat. I found this link on DSW, but I’ve seen photos where they look MUCH nicer than that on someone’s feet.
@FutureMrs.Spencer: Thanks so much for the suggestions, the search is definitely continuing! I was so glad the Jenna worked out so beautifully for you, can’t wait to see what it looks like when it fits you just right!
