Our first hiccup – the DJ contacted me today to let me know that he double-booked our September 17th date and we were the second booking so he’s backing out. Grrrr!
I’m having THE hardest time finding reliable, responsible, well-rounded DJs … any words of advice?
My son’s guitar teacher (who also teaches music at a local University) will be doing our ceremony music. He was in a band awhile back and now I’m wondering if we should have a live band instead of a DJ. Our venue is short of space though (holds 175 comfortably…which we will have). Would a smaller space be too chaotic for a live band (too loud)?

I think it would be too loud to have a live band in a small space. Ever been to a small bar with a live band for the night? I’m sorry he double booked. This is a fear of mine with any vendor.

Sorry this happened! I think a live band will be too loud though. If you liked this DJ, maybe you could ask him if he knows anyone else with a similar style.

Did you have a contract with your DJ? In my contract it stated that if the DJ was unable to appear that he must have a comparable DJ take his spot at not additional cost (and possibly even a refund if I remember correctly). That clause was in there mostly to cover illness or family emergency that could have occured last minute but it should apply in the case of double booking as well. I would go back and check your contract and see.

Oh no! That totally stinks. Thankfully you have time to find someone new or a band. Did you sign a contact with him? I agree with Eleonor Rigby…ask him if he could make some recommendations…it’s the least he can do after screwing you over!

We didn’t have a contract … our good friends used him for their wedding this past October and he was sorta non-chalant, “Hey, send me the deposit and I’ll make sure it happens.” I relied too much on the trust he built from this other couple (and he did a fabulous job at their wedding). He is returning the deposit (obviously) and we’ve been emailing this afternoon that he has someone else who may be able to help us. He’s insisting on being present when we all get together, says he will make sure the price is the same he would have charged, so I guess we’ll see how it goes.

Glad that he is giving your deposit back and helping you get hooked up with another DJ. Hopefully it will all work out for the best in the end!

Try the Pros. They network all over the country and we just used them for dj, video and photog.

good luck finding a reliable DJ. We thought ours was, that was until he backed out on us 2 weeks before our wedding. DJs are douchebags. At least you found out now, 9 months before hand.

Not all djs are douchebags. You get what you pay for.
There is plenty of time to find another person before September. Remember that it’s easy to get exactly what you want by explaining ahead of time -and include a list of music. Get a contract and get everything in writing. Keep a list of your playsets so that if something goes wrong, you still have your list for another dj.

We had our venue back out on us 6 weeks before the wedding because they found a better way to make more money the night of our wedding. Totally sucks! Alot of times “double booking” means someone offered to pay more money. =(
I wish you luck on finding a new DJ!!! Luckily you do have lots of time! Also, definetly find one with a contract! It will make things soo much easier!
