@mnp:  Your passport expires before the wedding?

My understanding is that you can book the honeymoon and all the papers in your maiden name since your passport will be with your maiden name.  Worry about the new paperwork and name change after, I say.

Hello date twin!  I’m just waiting until after the honeymoon to legally change my name – seems easiest to me.  That way, if something happens – my passport is delayed, or I can’t get my driver’s liscense or SS card in time, or I can get one but not the other so my passport says one thing but my driver’s liscense says another – I don’t have to worry about it affecting my honeymoon.  Also, my plane tickets and everything are all in my madien name and I don’t want to worry about that hassel either.

Plus, I don’t like it when people get married legally before their “wedding” day unless they have a really good reason such as deployment, immigration, health insurance, etc. AND they tell people about it.  But that’s a whole other story that I don’t want to get into.

I’ve been married for two years and my passport is still in my maiden name. Just make sure you book anything that would require it in your maiden name.  My passport doesn’t expire until 2014 so I’ll renew then and in the meantime I just carry my marriage certificate.

If you are in the U.S. you can get your passport redone with your married name at no cost as long as you do it within a year of renewing it.

@mnp:  Yeah, I wouldn’t want to worry about changing my name along with planning a wedding.  There are SO many things that need to be changed and it seems like it would only add more stress, and you know, weddings are stressful enough as it is!

I was all worried about making sure my married name was on my honeymoon paperwork, but in the end it will be a LOT less stress on me to not have to do that, so I am keeping my maiden name until after our cruise at the end of July. Way easier. Besides that, passports can take a long time to get back. I’d wait.

Are you having a church wedding? Some churches won’t do a wedding after you are civilly married, just a renewal of the vows. For me, I think you have one wedding, it can be civil or religious, but you shouldn’t have two. I get that it is common in the military and there are reasons for it, but for me, I feel like if you choose to go to the courthouse that is your wedding. If you want a big vow renewal later, that is fine, but call it that.
