Hey ladies! Happy Tuesday! Just came across something that I thought was interesting, and thought I’d ask my fellow bees for your thoughts. I recently was given my very first (and DEFINITELY not my last!!!) moissanite ring. It was purchased used and came with all the certification/warrenty information. Upon arrival, it was taken to our local custom jeweller to have the rose gold head replaced with a white gold head, and had it sized. The jeweller works with moissanite quite often, and so I had him check it for authenticity when it was dropped off. He inspected it with a loupe for a good 3 minutes and finally I asked if he could test it with a diamond tester. He said he “didn’t need to, as he works with moissanite a lot and knows without a doubt that it’s a moissy”. Fast forward and I have my ring back and it is the most gorgeous thing ever (biased
) however I still find myself wondering if there’s any tests I can do as I still feel slightly paranoid that I may have been taken. I tried the fog test after cleaning my stone, as I’ve read that moissy’s will react to the fog test very similarly to diamonds. Well, I tried it, and watched the fog sit on my stone for what felt like 5 minutes but was probably more like 5-7 full seconds. I have a moissy tester on the way, but wanted to as you Moissy bees–Does your stone pass the fog test?
Sorry for the novel, any help is appreciated!!

I am a little confused where did you buy this ring that you feel ripped off? Moissy isn’t really that expensive to begin with so I am not sure why someone would scam a moissy instead of a diamond?
Very glad you love you ring though

sway0060: It’s not that I feel ripped off. I just have never seen a moissy in person before purchasing this ring, and given that the jeweller didn’t test it with a diamond/moissy tester in front of me I just want to be sure I definitely got what I paid for. I basically wanted to make sure I was sent a moissy and not just a warm colored cz. The ring was bought second-hand online, that’s why I want to be sure.

sway0060: I hope so. It looks like it to me, the facets and sparkle look like the way I’ve heard moissy described, and I’m grateful that the jeweller looked at it with a loupe and was able to determine that it was moissy, however I would have felt better if he had just tested it for me.

If I wash my hands in cold water, my moissanite fogs up for about a minute. I’ve owned diamonds, ruby, sapphire, cz etc..and ive found that my moissanite is the only stone that does this.So I’m not sure if that’s just a moissy thing or not, but you could try it and see what happens?

mrssloan2013: Thank you for your reply! That honestly makes me feel a lot better, to know that it’s not uncommon. I tend to be a little paranoid when it comes to jewelry (examining prongs, checking that the stone is always set evenly, etc) so not too sure what my issue is lol but at least I will have my moissy tester soon as well so I’ll be able to check things like that myself.

OldGold: no problem! I’m sure your stone is in fact a moissanite. Would you mind posting a picture of it?

OldGold: WOW – that set is beautiful! I absolutely love it. Lucky girl.
As a side note – my jeweller is always the first to tell me the quality of a piece of jewellery. He’s very honest and it’s so sad that jewellers get such a bad rap. FWIW, like anything else – there are dishonest people and jewellery is one of those things (like cars) where you need an expert.
I would be completely satisfied that you got what you paid for. Mrs. Sloan knows her diamonds and moissanite! I’m glad she was able to put your mind at ease 🙂

womanofsubstance: vhenke1: Thanks ladies 🙂 yes I’m so glad MrsSloan replied because she definitely knows her stuff! Although I’m still waiting for her verdict…

All in all I am so happy the set turned out the way it did, it needed some repairs but the jeweller did an amazing job fixing everything and bringing it back to life.

OldGold: An experienced jeweler is more reliable than a electronic tester anyday. OEC moissies will show as diamonds and so will Amora Gem on some of the testers. I had one of those gold buyers/pawn shops mistake diamonds for cz because they used a tester and I got a great deal! I feel bad for the person they ripped off who lost out on getting paid correctly for their diamonds.

NovaRising: Oh wow that’s wild! I had no idea, I thought all moissy’s tested as diamonds (unless the tester has a moissanite-specific indicator)–learn something new every day! I feel silly for questioning what the jeweller says (given that he’s worked with a lot of moissy) but I’ll still feel better when my moissy tester shows up and I can get rid of this twinge

OldGold: I thought you went with a moissy-diamond tester. Those are the ones I’m familiar with. Some of them will say if it is cz if it is not the other two materials.
