I was actually JUST talking about GG with my boyfriend earlier because I was watching it on TV.

And I find it hilarious that one of the biggest criticisms is that the characters are sexually promiscuous. This may come as a shock but the elderly LOVE SEX. In fact, STI outbreaks are a huge problem amongst the older population, especially in nursing homes. It’s typically because of the lack of condom use(The thought is if you’re in your 60’s and already hit menopause then why bother?).

Part of what made GG so revolutionary is the fact that it showed that you don’t automatically take a vow of chastity as soon as you hit 60.

We have four goldfish whom we have lovingly nicknamed ‘Golden Girls’. So, I can’t say anything with negative connotations about this show. Otherwise I feel like I am talking smack about my goldfish. frown

Somewhere there’s a 34 year old in his parents’ basement laughing his ass off over how he’s stirring up the beehive with all these ridiculous posts.

At summer camp in the early 90s we had to create and perform skits.  I bullied my group into doing a Golden Girls skit and made sure I was Rose.  I was 10.  That show is a timeless classic.

With the exception of Sophia Petrillo, the characters on GG were all supposed to be in their late 50’s/early 60’s–hardly geriatric senior citizens.  It was a groundbreaking, feminist show that highlighted what late midlife looked like for a lot of women navigating menopause, divorces, spousal death, and everything that came along with it.  Still one of my favorites!
