Has anyone been to the Maldives before? Is anyone honeymooning there or planning a vacation there in the near future? I’d love to hear about your experiences, recommendations, which resort you stayed at, what time of year you went, etc.! Please share 🙂
We are planning to take our honeymoon in the Maldives in Feb. 2012. FI’s work schedule is nuts until then, but we will be taking a “mini-moon” right after the wedding and it works out nicely because we’ll be able to save up more $ for the outrageous resort food/drink prices! Reservations aren’t open yet so we haven’t officially booked our trip, but we will be staying at the Beach House Maldives for 6-7 nights. I am SO excited!

JEALOUS!! We looked into it but with buying a house, moving countries (which means buying all new stuff including cars), and paying for the wedding ourselves, our honeymoon budget is sad… I hope you have fun though, I hope to go someday!!

@indyJEEP: That looks AMAZING! If you don’t mind me asking, approximately how much does a week’s vacation cost there including room & airfare from CA? Feel free to PM me if you don’t want to share on the board. I want to start dreaming of our next vacation already 🙂

@kingytobe: The only reason we are able to go to the Maldives is because of all our travel points, otherwise it’d be WAYYY too expensive! I didn’t think we were going to be able to go on a honeymoon since we’re also paying for the wedding ourselves and saving for a potential relocation for work, but then we ended up racking up a TON of travel points that we can apply toward the trip. We still have to wait until 2012 because of work conflicts, but I definitely never thought I’d be going to the Maldives! I’m sorry you’re kinda bummed about your honeymoon budget, but pretty soon you’ll be purchasing your own home! And then you can start saving for your yay-we-bought-a-house-let’s-celebrate-by-going-on-vacation-as-soon-as-we-can trip
@meliss: We’re using our travel points to pay for the hotel accomodations, but it’d be about $9k to stay there for 6 nights if we were paying for it. Airfare seems to vary quite a bit, but it sounds like it’ll be anywhere between $4k-$8k total for the main flight + $900 for a round-trip domestic flight/speed boat transfer…. the prices for the main flight have varied a lot since I’ve been watching them, which makes me nervous!

We thought of having our honeymoon there. But when we looked into it we realised June was the wrong time of year to go, well we could but there’s more risk of storms etc. Plus we can’t afford it, even to go in June it would have cost £6000 / $9500. My friends went in November and the weather was lovely, though the week after when I looked at the weather there it was raining all week. February wiill be a perfect time to go. We thought about going somewhere that was at least half board or even all inclusive so that you don’t have to pay the high food and drink prices.

We had a couple at the Conrad in the Maldives last summer. They liked the resort, but they did have a lot of rain while they were there. Hopefully you’ll have great weather for your honeymoon. It really is a once in a lifetime destination.

@indyJEEP: I’m also in the bay area and have been researching the flights. It looks like Singapore Airlines and Emirates are the two major airlines to provide connecting flights with either 1 or 2 stops. Perhaps you can stay in one city either Singapore or Dubai for a couple of nights before your Maldives trip. We are going to break ours with a stay in Dubai for a couple of nights. I could not sit on the plane longer than the already 15 hour flight to Dubai. As you move closer to the date, prices tend to get lower.

@bellarain: Yeah, those are the two carriers that I’ve been keeping an eye on. We’re considering at least spending one night in Dubai because many of the flights that are less expensive arrive really late at night, and there aren’t any island transfers at night, so we’d be waiting around anyway. January’s prices seem low-ish, so I’m hoping that they’ll stay that way for February’s prices… we’ll just have to wait and see! What time of year are you guys going – will you be going there for your honeymoon right after the wedding? Which resort are you staying at, if you don’t mind me asking? We have three to choose from with our hotel points, but I’m pretty sure we’re going to book at the Beach House.

We’re going to the Maldives in May!!!! Its a little risky with the weather but from researching like crazy before booking its a hit or miss whether its rainy season or not. So we’re just hoping for good weather. We’re flying from Toronto, Canada which was going to be really pricey. After looking around more and more we decided to fly to London first (cheaper) and spend a few days there and head to the Madlives. The Maldives itself including the flight from London and seaplane to the island worked out to be $5200 Canadian for 7 nights. We got flights on sale to London for $632 each return! So it will be a costly trip with spending in London but in looking at 2 weeks in Aruba etc it was the same price.
We’re staying at the Kurumathi, its all inclusive, restuarnts not buffet and we got upgraded to a deluxe beach bungalow! SO excited.

Yeah my brother and sister-in-law were there on their honeymoon celebration. They loved the place. Their honeymoon was arranged by one of the top honeymoon planner companies http://www.indianhoneymoonpackages.com which are very much experienced in arranging honeymoon trips. They stayed in Paradise Island Resort & Spa***** and enjoyed a lot.
