Westwood: lol Saoirse is our chosen name if we have a daughter. It’ll get mispronounced but people will learn and neither of us can think of anything more beautiful. I was just surprised to see someone mention it here 🙂
OP I like the name I think it’s very strong and distinguished and am not at all a fan of the WASPyness of the other two names you mentioned.

peridot456: I think it’s more just taking into consideration what names are usually shortened to, i.e. if ‘Vicky’ sets yout teeth on edge you may want to go with a name other than Victoria.

Meh, I’m not really a fan of it. I don’t have a reason, I just don’t like it. But it doesnt really sound like you do either.
Regardless of the opinions in this thread, you should keep looking until you find a name you and your H love!

I don’t like it, and I would pronounce it Dash – ee – el.
If you want it pronounced Dash – ul, I would spell it Dashel (though even then you might get more Dash-el versus Dash-ul).
If you don’t love it, I would find something else. Good luck OP!

Unless he’s going to write awesome novels, please don’t.

Speck_: Good heavens you took it all wrong. I don’t mind anyone’s names. I just really hate butchering peoples name if I’m not sure how to pronounce them aloud. You’re making me sound like some racist person and I’m not.

VictorianChick: Chiming in to say I also do not know every author. Or even most authors. Mostly I try to make patrons like what I like because clearly I have the best taste. Just kidding, but seriously if not for NoveList I’d be up shit creek without a paddle.

dancingfox: I know – I’m shocked as a librarian she doesn’t know. I know about all sorts of authors whether I enjoy their work or not. I want to be up on things so I can guide my students to the right materials (teachers too). I’m a middle school librarian, but as a kid I grew up watching “The Thin Man” and while I haven’t read any of the books by Dashiell Hammett I knew all about them and about him. I like the name, but I like literary names.

People have been butchering my first and last name for my entire life, and I’m fine. Name him whatever you love, he’ll be proud of his name 😄
side note: I will have a last name that people can actually spell AND pronounce in 6 days, so that’s super exciting!

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen…
First thing that poped into my head. No.

I really can’t believe people in English-speaking countries have never heard the name Dashiell. It’s not a weird name! Would you really not know how to pronounce it?

i dont like it but its not going to be my name or my kid so it doesnt matter.

thelibrarylady: VOYA for me 🙂 We all have our tools!
lovechocolate: Are you saying I don’t know many authors or their works and that I must be a horrible librarian because I dont know this one? Clearly you are.

dancingfox: If you like Dash, just name him that 🙂
