Back on June 26th, my FI was set to arrive for his first full two weeks at home since February. (He’s a touring musician and it’s been a completely crazy year.) I was so excited and then super bummed when his flight got delayed by about 5 hours…but after a lot of twiddling my thumbs I finally picked him up from the airport around midnight. We were really happy he was home but crashed pretty quickly – it had been a long day of waiting for both of us.
I work from home a lot, and the next morning I did a little work first thing but had planned to take the rest of the day off so we could relax together. After I finished wouprk, he made me breakfast and we caught up on some Netflix. Totally normal. He cleared the plates he said to me, “Oh! I almost forgot. I bought you a present while I was away!” This was unusual, to say the least. He’s done flowers or candy before, but never gifts out of the blue.
He told me to close my eyes. I heard him opening his suitcase and then he put something on the coffee table in front of me. It was a large box. He told me to open it. Inside there was a gorgeous Coach purse and wristlet. I am NOT usually a fancy things kind of gal – I was floored.
I looked up at him from my seat on the couch and said, “This is too much! Why in the world would you do this?” His voice quivered a little as he said, “Well, you’re amazing, and you deserve nice things. And I want to treat my wife well.”
I got even more confused until I saw him reaching into his pocket and lowering down onto one knee. (In my head I kept hearing Maya Rudolph in Bridesmaids: “It’s happening, it’s happening!) My eyes nearly bugged out of my head and my stomach erupted with butterflies. He said something about us having been through a lot and how ultimately I’m his best friend and we’re stronger together. Then he popped open the ring box and asked me to marry him!
My answer, through tear-filled eyes and a nervous cackle: “Are you crazy?”
He stared at me for a second with a panicked look before asking, “Is that a yes?”
I laughed, said yes, tears flowed and I watched as he slid a beautiful ring onto my shaking finger.
Afterwards of course we wanted to call both of our parents, but no one was home! We ended up going out for some celebratory Starbucks and strolling through some shops, totally giddy and feeling like we had this incredible secret that we couldn’t share until we made the calls. Our families were ultimately thrilled.
It was an incredible two weeks together. He actually played a show relatively close to home a few days after he proposed so I got to go and bask in the many many congratulations from his bandmates and the crew which was so much fun. He’s back on the road now and we have to wait a few weeks to get dates for next year before we start planning, but I’m so happy and so excited and feel like the luckiest lady on the planet 🙂
