DJ for sure! I’ve never been impressed with live bands at weddings. They just don’t get people moving the same way in my experience. Especially if you have a younger crowd, a DJ will keep the party going.

We had a live band and LOVED it. The band played a variety of crowd-pleasing songs and really fed off the energy of everyone on the dance floor. But we wanted mostly oldies dance songs- classic rock, disco, R&B, 80s, etc. and didn’t really care much for the latest rap or pop hits.

I did have a handful of songs that I knew the band wouldn’t know, and asked if I could play my own music during the bands’ breaks. It worked out really well! That way I was able to get some of the songs I absolutely wanted played. If I had to do over again I’d absolutely still go with the band- but I think it’s up to you. Are your parents paying and that’s why they’re pushing for a band? That might be a trickier situation to manage.

Gotta be honest, as a guest in her late twenties, I’ve always wanted to be invited to a wedding with a band.  It just feels so classy and elegant and romantic.  DJs can definitely be hit or miss.  Of the few weddings I’ve attended, all had DJs and maybe half of them were of a standard I would consider for my own wedding.  I feel like the risks are almost equal and I’m kind of with your parents.  Team Band!

Such a tough one.  I personally love a band but I know the covers just don’t sound the same.  And obviously they’re better at specific genres.  I have nothing to really contribute other than I am struggling with the same thing! Why does your Fiance think a DJ/band combo won’t work smoothly?

No debate for me…we had both a live band and DJ.

To be honest, though, the band was way better and they had everyone on the floor.  One of my cousins even asked for their Youtube so he could watch more of their gigs.

We had a DJ but I would have preferred a band. I think it’s more fun and entertaining.

I went to a bunch of events in college that had bands with DJ breaks that went smoothly. But I think people like it better if they can dance to the genre of the band (e.g. swing dance to a swing band), instead of dancing to covers.

mrsziggy :  it depends on the crowd. Not just age but the type of music they’re into etc. We had a band until 11pm and then a DJ from 11-1.30 and honestly we should have had the band on longer as people were really dancing, singing along etc. However, our crowd (including the younger generation) much prefers live music and also likes older songs (60s/70s).

If your crowd generally prefer modern pop/RnB/etc then a DJ makes way more sense. We were lucky as we had time to do both and so cater for everyone (we also had a string trio in the day and an acoustic guitarist/singer to start the evening before the band who also went down an absolute storm), but I know weddings outside the UK tend to be much shorter and so there isn’t time. One compromise could be to have live music during cocktail hour or for the ceremony.

We had live music for a couple of hours, a pianist and his wife. I wouldn’t change that for the world. There’s just something about classical music that I love. But I also realise that it’s not to everyone’s taste. A dj might be better if dancing is what you are after 🙂

Honestly bands are so much classier – but you have to definitely put the work in to find a great one and pay up for talent. If you’re not willing to spend at least $7k or so on a band then just go DJ.
