Bee’s I’m frantic this morning.
I rolled over to check my emails after my alarm went off and I had one from the passport agency and my heart instantly started pounding. I am expecting them to send me my shiny new, name-changed, passport any day now for my international cruise in TWO WEEKS. In among all the beurocratic jargon and privacy statements they told me I need to mail in a certified copy (not notarized) of my marriage license reflecting the name change. IT WAS CLIPPED TO THE APPLICATION WITH MY CHECK!! of course they had no problems cashing the check 4 weeks ago right after I mailed it so I know they got the package. There is a phone number they gave for “questions” that I’m going to call on my work break (fingers crossed it’s a real person and not an automated version of their FAQ) but I am going to be LIVID if they lost my marrige license and just now are communicating this to me. That was my one and only certified copy and the county never gave me an original. I also now live 5 hours away from the county we were married in so IF I can even get another copy before our trip there’s no way it’ll get to the passport office and back in time.
My first thought was that they didn’t like how I filled everything out since I used my married name on the application and just listed my maiden name as a “previously known by” while my marrige license only shows my full maiden name and my husbands full name. That seems pretty standard from what I can tell though.
I am hoping with every fiber of my being that someone just fat fingered the wrong button while they were processing the documents or realized their mistake after they hit send on that automated email. But holy cow, what do I do if they actually LOST it?!?
Mostly just a vent about the situation but have any of you other married bee’s had this happen?

What a horrible way to start your day.
Is there someone near your marriage county that could pick up and over night a certified copy to the passport agency? (I would if I could, but I am not on the east coast. Or can someone in the county records department help you?
Also, if possible, try to have your passport application expedited and overnighted back to you.

You can keep your old passport if it hasn’t expired provided your ticket name can be changed to your maiden name. Maybe that as a last resort?
Sorry for the stress. I hate it when people don’t do their job properly. 🙁

littleeskimo: I wish this was an option at this point! Unfortunately, I had to mail it in with the name change application so it’s floating around in some governamnet office in PA right now…probably clipped to the marriage license they say they don’t have
handa: I honestly should have gone for the expedited option when I sent it in but I thought I had plenty of time and skipped the extra $60 it would have cost. I might be sending my sister on a roadtrip this afternoon as she’s only an hour away from the registrar’s office…

What a nice sister.
I think you may be able to upgrade to the expedited service if you include a check. Also please ask if you can pay to have your passport overnighted back to you.

So I just got off the phone with the passport agency and they have officially lost my marriage license.
The (very nice) lady said that they didn’t have it at all even though I’m positive I sent it. Her guess was that it got stuck in the envelope and whoever proccessed it didn’t pull it out since all they were expecting was an application, check and the old passport for a normal renewal and it either got tossed with the envelope or was dropped along the way.
My stuff is currently being sent over to missing doc’s and I’m crossing my fingers it’s sitting in a “lost and found” pile and I get a phone call this afternoon saying they found it.
Now to frantically get that new marriage license and pay a fortune overnighting things everywhere…. Here’s hoping I can get this done and not forfeit the $110 application fee if they have to send my old one back for me to use!
