I say app lee Kay 🙂 and Aussie too. Haha . I think if it has a dash like this / above the e it’s always pronounced aY. If it has one of these ” above the e it’s pronounced ee

I read it as app-leek too, and I know French. I wouldn’t have thought it was app-lee-kay unless it was spelled appliqué (is it? I’m not familiar with how this word is being used).

@KellyLouise:  you’re right. As long as it has a dash like é, it’s an -ay sound. If it has a dash going the other way (è) it’s a totally different sound though.

I guess I’ve been saying it correctly, but when I saw the title of your thread, I thought I may have been saying it incorrectly all this time too, haha!

@Sutaru:  I don’t think an accent grave (that’s probably spelled wrong) is ever on the last letter in a word…but I could be wrong.

I say it right because I am “french”? Appleek sounds really funny! Of course it depends where the syllable goes when you take a word in – tomahto vs tomato –

It’s written “appliqué” so it’s pronounced app-lee-kay

I never say this word outloud, because although I know the correct way to say it, my head always reads it as app-li-keek LOL

I’ve always heard it pronounced APP-li-kay… But the “li” sound is more like how it sounds in the work “lick” or “liquorice” than “LEE”.

I found out recently I’ve been pronouncing quinoa wrong for a decade! I make it a lot too. Stupid pronunciation!

@BuffaloDots:  lol how have you been saying it? I was calling it “kwin-oh-uh” for a looong time til i heard its “keen-wah”!

i say app-lee-kay cause of the accent above the e.

@Omgbunnies I said kwin oh ah (which is how americans would pronounce it). Errr! I minored in linguistics too.

I still read it as Keen-oh-ah  even though I know it Keen-wah! At least I always had the first part right! LOL (as in Keen not kwin.) oh well, not the end of the world!
